The holy leaf is one of those plants widely used mainly in Mexican cuisine, but among its properties are many medicinal ones that we can take advantage of outside the gastronomic context. The holy leaf is an endemic plant of the Mexican territory, it is widely distributed in tropical forests and mixed forests, but its survival benefits allow it to be cultivated in city gardens. It is a large-leaved plant that can reach up to 5 meters in height, although it normally does not grow higher than 1.5 meters. The holy leaf has a high content of safrole that helps reduce headaches, it also acts as an anesthetic, which is why it is used in case of insect or snake bites. Among its phytocompounds we also find ascorbic acid, beta-carotene and niacin. As for minerals, it is rich in calcium and iron.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture of Mexico, the holy leaf is used as an ally to reduce fever, combat nerves and insomnia. In addition, it combats stomach pain and relieves symptoms of constipation and diarrhea, thanks to the fact that it has large amounts of vegetable fiber. In addition to this, cleansing properties of the bronchi are attributed to it, so it is used against bronchitis, asthma and to relieve coughing.

How to prepare holy leaf tea?

As we have already mentioned, the medicinal properties of hoja santa are extensive, so an infusion of this herb is an excellent natural remedy to alleviate certain conditions. To prepare holy leaf tea, you only have to place a leaf in a liter of water and boil for 10 minutes. Once you remove from the heat, strain and serve as desired.

You can also use it raw to add to green smoothies, or add it to dishes to give them an exquisite flavor and take advantage of its properties.
