One of the best known insects are bees. Also called anthophiles, they are notorious for the production of honey and other goods consumed by humans. There are about 20,000 known species, very different from each other. Not all produce honey and also vary in size and color. However, most present coloration in black and yellow or golden tones. These are present all over the world, except Antarctica, and are frequently found in places where vegetation rich in flowers abounds. They feed on pollen and nectar from flowers, although there are species that have a slightly different diet.
In addition, bees are recognized for their organizational skills; their colonies are made up of thousands of individuals and each one fulfills a specific function. They inhabit holes or hives built by themselves. In each hive or honeycomb there are three different classes. The only queen bee is in charge of laying eggs and its primary function is merely reproductive. The workers follow; sterile females who are in charge of cleaning the honeycomb, putting everything in order and taking care of the young. The males, or drones, are in charge of mating with the queen. Bees fulfill a fundamental function for the balance of ecosystems; pollination. These are responsible for the pollination of about 70% of all plants, of which a third serves as food for humans. Pollination consists of the passage of pollen from the male to the female organs in plants; Although there are other animals and insects that carry it out, bees are the main group that participates in this process. There is electrostatics in their bodies, which allows pollen to stick to their bodies and be carried to other flowers.
At present, the number of these insects has been drastically reduced; urbanization, the destruction of their habitats, the use of insecticides and pesticides, electrical towers or other magnetic fields; all cause disorientation and death. The fear that humans have developed of their bite also contributes, although this is practically harmless. It is believed that, if they were to become extinct, all flowering plants would disappear with them, so their preservation is of vital importance. Let’s do what is in our hands to safeguard the integrity of these insects, because our survival also depends on them.
