What does the Bible say about witches and sorcerers?

Sorcerers, witches, sorcerers and nigromantes. In the Bible these mysterious figures appear that lead us to think that there were already such realities. How they brought, not the beauty of the magic that we all love, but of dangerous people for the spiritual health of those who knew them. Let’s find out, then, what the Bible says about witches and sorcerers.

I managed to find four verses of the Bible that talk about witchcraft explicitly and strong tones.

Main conclusions

The Bible contains several verses that address practices related to witchcraft and sorcery.

Exodus 22:18 It is often cited as a strong conviction, stating that sorcerers should not be allowed to live.

Deuteronomy 18: 10-12 lists several practices, including divination and necromance, such as abominations to the Lord.

Galatians 5: 19-21 warns against the works of the flesh, including sorcery, and affirms that those who dedicate themselves to such activities will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Although the Bible does not explicitly use the terms «witches» or «sorcerers», these verses are usually interpreted as negative references to practices associated with witchcraft.

Interpretations may vary between the different Christian denominations and scholars, but these passages generally advise or condemn the practice of witchcraft and sorcery.

So what does the Bible say about witches and sorcerers?

It cannot be said that magical activities are direct and specific diabolical actions and magicians usually, they themselves do not admit being related to the devil. Both in the past and today, some witches work closely collaboration with the devil, but these are isolated cases. What the Bible says with certainty is that the various forms of magic facilitate diabolical actions both in terms of sin and harassment.

Biblicodescription Versexode 22:18 «You will not allow you to live a sorceress.» (RVR) Deuteronomy 18: 10-12 «It will not be among you who burn your child or your daughter as an offering, nor who practices the divination or guess the future or interpreted omens, or sorcerer, neither lovely, nor medium, nor nigromante, nor whoever asked the dead, because anyone who does these things is abomination to Yahweh.» (RVR) Galatians 5: 19-20 «Now, the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, lawsuits, jealousy, anger attacks, rivalries, dissensions, divisions.» (RVR) Apocalypse 21: 8 «But as for the cowards, the unbelievers, the detestables, the murderers, the fornicaries, the sorcerers, the idolaters and all the liars, their part will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.» (RVR)Table 1: Biblical verses about witchcraft

The spells alter the filial relationship between man and God, leave aside prayer and sacraments, link the will to superstitious practices, encourage hate and revenge. Often, the advice of witches also incite or approve sexual behaviors contrary to the law of God.

The supposed release of invoices or breakdowns is only an illusion, as well as the production and launch of invoices against those who want to harm.

For all of the above, the Bible says that the Word of God cannot be judged against the various forms of magic of excessive severity. The Word of God is fair and source of salvation.

Let’s see some concrete verses now.

Leviticus 20:27

«If a man or woman, among you, they practice nigromance or divination, will have to be sentenced to death; they will be stoned and their blood will fall on them.

Galatians 5: 17-21

«In fact, the flesh has desires contrary to the spirit and the spirit has wishes contrary to the flesh; these things oppose each other, so you do not do what you want. But if you leave guided by the spirity you are not under the law. After all, the works of the flesh are well known: fornication, impurity, debauchery, idolatry, witchcraft, enmity, discord, jealousy, jealousy, dissensions, divisions, divisions, divisions, divisions, divisions, divisions, divisions, divisions, divisions, divisions, divisions, divisions, divisions, divisions, divisions, divisions, divisions, divisions, divisions, divisions. Envy, drunkenness, orgies and similar things;

Apocalypse 21: 8

«But for vile and unbelievers, abjects and murderers, immoral, sorcerers, idolaters and for all liars, the burning pond of fire and sulfur is reserved. This is the second death.»

Acts of the apostles 8-9 / 20-23

«For some time there was a man named Simon, dedicated to magic, which was ecstatic to the population of Samaria posing as a great person.»

«Simon, seeing that the spirit was conferred with the imposition of the hands of the apostles, offered them money by saying:» Give me this power, so that to whom I impose my hands receives the Holy Spirit. «But Peter replied:» Your money goes with you to perdition, because you dared to think about buying the gift of God with money. There is no part or destiny for you in this thing, because your heart is not straight to God. Repent, then, from this iniquity of yours and pray to the Lord to forgive you this thought. Indeed, I see you locked in bitter Hiel and in strings of iniquity. «

Impact on witches and sorcerers over the centuries

The belief in the existence of magic, is understood as a particular force that, through specific magical rituals, made by certain particular individuals, (that is, witches, sorcerers, shamans, fortune tellers, etc.), of both sexes, or due to supernatural beings, it is presumed that it can exercise a particular domain over the forces of nature and also on a human being, pouring them into the will of those who perform these practices As in the existence of witchcraft, closely associated with Magick, understood as the exercise of these Magickales practices by these special individuals to which it is presumed that they can influence both positively (white magic) and negatively (black magic) nature and human beings, is present in most ancient and modern cultures.

Christianity began to take the relay of Greco-Roman religion and culture, inevitably had to face and collide with this magical-passional reality, which would continue for many centuries, especially in rural areas.

Biblical -description verse Levitico 19:26 «You will not eat meat with blood. You will not interpret omens or say the Buenaventura.» (RVR) Isaiah 47: 12-14 «Keep firm in your enchantments and in your many spells, with which you have worked from your youth; maybe you can succeed; you may come over you. (RVR) Acts 16: 16-18 «When we headed to the place of prayer, we met a slave who had a spirit of divination and procured his owners many profits with divination. He followed us with Paul and us, shouting: ‘These men are servants of the Most High God, who announces the path of salvation. I order in the name of Jesus Christ that you leave it. ‘ (ESV)Table 2: Biblical verses on divination and divination of the future

For Christianity, pagan religion and magical practices they represent only one thing, because both are idolatrous and are nothing more than the residue and survival of ancient cults and beliefs, so they are considered simply as a set of «superstitions.»

In addition, Christianity, especially with St. Augustine, adds another element, namely the fact of considering both the cult of the ancient pagan gods and popular superstitions no less than the work of the ancient enemy, Satan, who, together with his servers, the devils, which in the ancient world were known and called demons, that is, those beings or intermediary spirits between the divinities and man, who interacted in the world, that interacted in the world, that interacted in the world, which interacted in the world, which interacted in the world, which interacted in the world, which interacted in the world, Like the gods, negatively or positively, thus cheating on men.

San Agustín

The pagans, believing that they worshiped the gods, actually worshiped without realizing Satan and, therefore, also the magical arts were considered a work of the devil.

Precisely for this reason, the Church, during the High Middle Ages, considered magic and witchcraft, together with the cult of Greco -Roman gods and traditions, such as paganism residues and, above all, as a effect of demonic illusions.

In the slow and gradual process of conversion of pagan peoples to Christianity, the Church tried to eradicate the ancient beliefs and replace them with the cult of the true God through popular preaching and the dissemination of the cult of the saints and the miracles they performed and their relics, but also through the imposition of penance to whom they continued to practice them.

What if you are Catholic but you intrigue you?

I really believe that we must all choose what kind of spirituality it suits us. If we are diving in magic and its crafts it is because perhaps our traditional beliefs are not resonating with us as they should, then I do not see anything bad in practicing magic, also because, as we have often discussed, magic is not an evil practice, as long as it is practiced with good intentions and an open heart.

You know yourself and, if you feel you need some magic, do it. Religions were created to calm our pains and heal our souls but, if they can’t do that, there is nothing wrong with trusting something different, but that is my opinion.
