Urban jungle: how to apply green decor at home

Integrating plants into decoration has been gaining prominence in residential environments. They bring a feeling of coziness and life to the space and, for that reason, are good bets for all environments.

In apartments located in large urban centers, the pleasure of living together and growing plants is immense. The question, however, is what are the best species to have at home and how to insert them into the decor. “In practice, our work consists of including plants and elements linked to nature within the environments”, says architect Flávia Nobre, partner of interior designer Roberta Saes at the office Meet Arquitetura.

Far beyond aesthetic contributions, plants bring well-being and comfort to environments. In addition to also removing negativity and guarantee freshness to space. “It is scientifically proven that this presence promotes human well-being and, in a way, it also reminds us of our Brazilianness”, says Roberta.

Plants in the decoration can be included through vases, shelves, crates in woods, use of bricks and a variety of materials that allow professionals to produce environments with a single species, combinations, vertical gardens and even vegetable gardens with spices. “They completely transmute the essence of the projects, bringing volume and an intoxicating look”, reveals Roberta.

Where to include plants at home?

Most plants need light and ventilation to survive. Therefore, verandas and vertical gardens are, without a doubt, the main bets for environments to include them in the decoration. It is possible to create a true green oasis depending on the size of the space they will be positioned! “We always suggest starting the collection in areas such as verandas and dining and living rooms, preferably close to windows, which will provide ventilation and natural light that are so valuable to them”, points out Flávia.

But calm down, if you insist on including plants in more intimate environments – such as bedrooms and bathrooms – you don’t have to give up. The important thing is to know how to dose. “All you have to do is choose the right species for these rooms with less natural light and maintain proper care,” says Flávia.

With regard to the species chosen for the environments, specialists tend to look for those that are simpler to care for and that accept indirect lighting well, such as ferns, Adam’s ribs, snake’s beard and boa constrictors.

Plant care in decoration

Most of the doubts are related to the watering process, as each plant has specific attributes and absorption properties – therefore, each plant has a specific demand for watering.

Checking whether the soil is wet or dry is the basic premise for analyzing the watering stage. “This is a thermometer that we can use as a reference. But I would still say that whoever received a plant at home needs to know a little more. Searches on the internet and videos on YouTube contribute to the learning of the resident who, in turn, will have a friendly coexistence and the satisfaction of seeing it in full development”, recommends Flávia.

In addition to water regularlythe specialists give a smart tip, making use of the hair dryer: with the cold mode, every 15 days, using it over the entire length of the foliage helps to remove accumulated pollution.

As a final bet, the professionals recommend using caution and creativity as allies. “We always recommend starting small. Often, the client comes to us with the excitement of having many species distributed around the house. But we always say that this relationship starts with learning, step by step”, concludes Roberta.
