Orchids are known for the different shape of their petals, following the same line as the one that looks like a baby in the cradle, Peristeria elata resembles a dove. That is why it is known by many nicknames such as ‘Pomba Orchid’, ‘Holy Spirit Orchid’, ‘Holy Trinity Orchid’.
The flowers are white, waxy and fragrant and can reach over 3 meters in height and contain more than a dozen flowers. They appear in late summer and early fall, but can take months to reach maturity.
This orchid is rare, native to Panama, it is necessary to have some experience to cultivate it at home, because they require a little more attention. The dove orchid needs to stay in warm temperatures, around 20 °C, and the light must be different for each phase of the plant.
As young seedlings, light should be low to medium and as the plants mature brighter light should be available. The foliage can easily burn in extreme temperatures or strong light, so it is recommended that they are left in a cool place.
Water and fertilize during active growing months. As it matures, reduce fertilizer and water, but pay attention to the soil: don’t let the roots dry out!
