Previously, Dylan had been accused of copying the photographic work of Henri Cartier-Bresson and Léon Busy In the paintings that make up The Asia Seriesa exhibition exhibited in the Gagosian Gallery in New York in 2011, in which 18 paintings and drawings made by Bob Dylan during his trips to Asia were exhibited.

The controversy occurred when several media began to point out similarities of the novel with The House of Sleeping Beauties, of Japanese Yasunari Kawabata, Nobel Prize 1968. The subject did not go far when intellectual companions defended him, claiming that it was a simple inspiration.
