Description
The Gold Tarot or Visconti-Sforza Tarot stands out for being the most complete of the old tarot decks that are preserved. On the occasion of the tenth anniversary of his marriage, in 1451, Francesco Sforza commissioned the well-known artist Bonifacio Bembo to create a deck of cards in his honor. Originally used as playing cards, over the next three centuries these cards became a divination tool, which is how they are most commonly used today. Each exquisitely painted card in the Visconti-Sforza deck is a tiny masterpiece. The scenes are richly enhanced with gold leaf, and made with pigments made from pulverized lapis lazuli, malachite, and other precious minerals. In this edition of The Gold Tarot, its author, Mary Packard, does an excellent job of reintroducing the Visconti-Sforza Tarot for today’s audience. It offers clues about its history and its symbolism, while valuing its beauty and its usefulness in divination. Once again, we see that the tarot is an expression of an eternal philosophy, an inheritance that we cannot allow to be lost.
