Here we love succulents and cacti and we always bring some very different species for you to discover, cultivate in your garden and give a “change” between common plants. We’ve already shown succulents in the shape of roses, glass and even robots that take care of the plants.
But now, this time, it is a “mythological” cactus, nicknamed ‘Mermaids tail’. It belongs to the succulent class and, as its name implies, its shape, full of small long leaves, which look like hair or thorns, resembles the a mermaid’s tail.
The scientific name of the species is Cleistocactus cristataalso known as ‘Fish tail’. It is a resistant cactus and its growth is slow, reaching a considerable size (up to 50 cm in height and diameter, or more).
Like all cacti and succulents, the Mermaid Tail is easy to grow. It likes full sun or half shade, soil that has good drainage, without excess water. It needs watering only when the soil is quite dry. If it is planted directly in the ground, it will not have any problems, even on rainy days. If growing in pots, you must be careful not to accumulate water.
It is also recommended not to use small plates to accumulate water in the bottom, or if you use it, remove all the water gathered.
More tips: Watering during the active growing season (spring and summer) will encourage steady growth and prevent the ridge from becoming limp. During the winter months they should be kept somewhat dry.
