  • first
  • waterproof sealant
  • Paint (acrylic or latex)
  • paint brushes

How to make

Step 1: Clean the clay pot

To paint a clay pot, you can use a new pot or an older one that you have lying around. Whether new or old, you’ll want to work with a vase of clean clay when starting this painting project.

If you find that your clay pot is pretty ok to start with, you can simply wipe it down thoroughly with a damp cloth and let it dry before applying the primer.

If you are working with a vase clay that is older or has an adhesive on it, you may choose to go the deep cleaning route. Simply place your clay pots in a large bucket of warm water. Let them soak for at least 30 minutes.

Once soaked, wipe off any stickers or stains and let them dry in the sun. This usually takes a few hours. Once dry, you can use sandpaper to help you remove any lingering stains or tack.

Step 2: Prepare your area

While your vase is drying, prepare your area for painting. Use newspaper or any type of cover to place on a table or work area, grab your paints and grab your brushes.

Step 3: Prepare your vase

Apply a primer to any part of the clay pot that you are going to paint. If you plan to leave certain pieces unpainted, apply a waterproof sealant to those pieces. Basically, you want the entire outside of the toilet to be covered with primer or sealant.

If you know you’re going to cover the entire pot with primer, you can also opt for primer spray. Just flip it upside down on newspaper and spray. Let the container dry completely before painting over the primer.

Step 4: Paint your vase

Now the fun part. Painting your clay pot can be as simple as adding small designs with a brush, such as squiggles or dots.

Alternatively, this process can take several steps if you’re planning on painting a more complex design. As with painting anything with layers, make sure each layer of paint is completely dry before adding it.

If you’re going for a geometric or striped design, you can use masking tape to help you get straight lines. To do this, clip the part or shape you want to paint, apply the paint and remove the tape.

Step 5: Seal your clay pot

When you’re done painting, it’s important to apply a sealant to protect your art. It’s best to do this after waiting a day or two so the paint is dry and set.

When you’re ready, spray a clear acrylic sealer all over the vase. Make sure you cover it completely with the sealant. Let it dry. Then apply a second coat for good measure.

Let your second coat dry completely before adding soil and introducing your baby plant to its new home. Your plant will definitely love the new sunset or the arabesque-painted clay pot.
