Do you want a dog, but want or need to get a particularly relaxed animal with a low threshold? Different dog breeds have different characteristics, and as such, there are certain breeds that can be considered relaxed dog breeds.

An animal of a relaxed dog breed barks less, needs less exercise than other conspecifics and is generally considered to be a more comfortable fellow.

Note that within a breed of dog there will always be individuals whose temperament and type differ from the general characteristics of the breed. This article is for guidance. You should always get to know the individual animal personally before adopting it.

We can recommend the following breeds:

  • basset hound
  • Afghan Hound
  • Eurasian
  • German Mastiff
  • French bulldog

Rest and movement drive: the basset hound

The Basset Hound is a calm, mostly well-behaved dog that rarely barks. Already in the face you can see dogs of this dog breed that he looks good-natured and funny. Bassets are considered balanced and good-natured.

Although he has a deep, sonorous bark, he rarely uses it. In general, with appropriate upbringing, he behaves calmly and well-behaved despite the hustle and bustle around him. The basset hound was originally used for hunting. As such, we would tend to label him as a breed that, while a laid-back breed of dog, tends to be considered calm rather than easygoing. The basset hound rarely barks but needs plenty of exercise.

A basset hound will weigh between 20 and 29 kilograms and has a life expectancy of between ten and twelve years. The elongated animals with the long floppy ears are between 30 and 38 centimeters tall.

Elegant and quiet: the Afghan greyhound

Afghan hounds, like the basset hound, are a laid-back breed of dog as they tend to be calm in disposition. Not because they don’t need much exercise. Animals of this breed need a lot of exercise and often appear wild and exuberant outside. Back at home, however, this dog likes to enjoy the peace and quiet.

The beautiful animals look elegant and proud. Afghan hound breeders have always wanted specimens of this breed to have long, silky coats and an elegant, springy gait.

The Afghan Hound will reach between 63 and 74 centimeters at the shoulder and between 20 and 30 kilograms. Its life expectancy is twelve years.

Resting Observers: The Eurasier

When we write about relaxed dog breeds for you, we cannot ignore the Eurasier. The animals like to watch what is happening and are considered self-confident but reserved. Eurasiers are adaptable and therefore very sensitive. Animals of this dog breed seek close contact with their owners and have a pronounced social behavior. You don’t want to be left in the hands of strangers even when you’re on holiday.

The dogs, which are between 48 and 60 centimeters in size, need a break of several hours after each interval of movement, which is why they are among the most relaxed dog breeds. Just under two hours of outdoor walks throughout the day are enough to make the Eurasier happy.

The fluffy animals are between 12 and 15 years old and weigh between 18 and 32 kilograms as adults.

Independently relaxed: The Great Dane

As the largest dog in this list, the Great Dane is a stately specimen with a shoulder height of 71 to 86 centimeters. Animals of this breed of dogs bark extremely rarely, so they are considered relaxed. Great Danes are also very compatible and social when it comes to socializing with other animals.

The nature of the Great Dane can be described as loving and affectionate, but Great Danes still behave more independently and less submissively than other affectionate conspecifics. At the same time, Great Danes have a high stimulus threshold, which makes them a suitable family dog. These relaxed animals also welcome a warm-hearted, gentle upbringing with positive mechanisms instead of strictness.

The graceful Great Dane can live up to ten years and females can weigh up to 59 kilograms. Male Great Danes can weigh anywhere from 54 to a whopping 90 kilograms when fully grown.

The cuddler: French bulldog

The French bulldog is an absolute family dog. Animals of this relaxed dog breed are loyal, affectionate and very cute with their short nose. The animals are cuddly and need little exercise. Unfortunately, due to their breeding, the small pointed-eared ones often have problems with their lungs, which is why they cannot tolerate prolonged exercise units. Do you need more frequent breaks and want to focus on shorter but more frequent sessions? Then the French bulldog is a good catch.

They have short, shiny coats and make excellent family pets as they are very patient and never unforgiving dogs. However, you will need to be patient and consistent when raising a French bulldog yourself as they tend to be stubborn which admittedly comes across as very lovable.

A French bulldog is up to 35 centimeters high and weighs up to 14 kilograms and has a life expectancy of between ten and twelve years.

Don’t worry about high vet bills

Unfortunately, dogs also get sick or have accidents – just like us humans. It is all the more important that your fur nose then receives the perfect and most comprehensive treatment. With you ensure the best possible medical care – and the veterinary bills: we’ll take care of them for you.
