Life outside of Mexico
At the death of Manuel Romero Rubio, Carmen received some properties in Mexico City and other places in the country, as well as actions in mines and other businesses. For his part, Porfirio Díaz was a shareholder of the Bank of Mexico and London, And it was thanks to the sale of those actions and the income that Carmen received, which both could live in Europe during their exile.
The Spanish government offered Díaz the opportunity to live in that country that recognized him as a hero and democratizer of a country that shouted aid before his arrival to power. Spain was not the only country that recognized and the old general: France and Germany paid honors by Díaz too And it was France, particularly Paris, the city chosen by the Diaz family to reside during exile.
Every summer, the family was traveling to San Juan de la Luz to get away from the heat of the city. Also being in exile they were able to travel to Cairo, to Madrid, to Frankfurt or Switzerland where Díaz took a therapy with hot springs that helped him with his health problems.
