Oaxaca iconic alebrijes are already protected against plagiarism

Protection was carried out at the request of the Oaxaca Economics Secretary and requested through a letter received at the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property last August. It specifies that the protected figures will be those carved in wood and painted with a wide variety of colors and motifs made in five locations: San Antonio Arrazola, San Martín Tilcajete, Unión Tejalapam, San Pedro Taviche and Oaxaca de Juárez.

This legal protection covers the history of alebrijes as well as their process of elaboration, obtaining wood, design, painting, drying, marketing criteria, among other factors. A geographical indication not only serves as protection against plagiarism, but also provides recognition, difference and adds value to the products.

Currently Alebrijes are recognized in the Mexican collective and artistic imaginary and are submerged in traditions such as the day of the dead. In Mexico, the Popular Art Museum has promoted its value in Mexican culture, organizing parades with monumental alebrijes.

Additionally, in Mexico City these Alebrijes are exposed in Paseo de la Reforma to be observed and admired by the public.
