THE STORY OF OUR LADY OF PERPETUAL HELP
Our Lady of Perpetual Help was born from a painting of the miraculous Mary, which was stolen from a Church on the island of Crete, Greece, in the 15th century. In the painting, Our Lady is depicted holding the infant Jesus, who is looking at two angels displaying the elements of their passion. The angels are holding a cross, a rod with a sponge, and a spear.
The boy is frightened and hugs the Mother, a sandal falling from his feet. The Archangels Michael and Gabriel are hovering on the shoulders of Mary. This icon would be a copy of a painting of Our Lady painted by Saint Luke.
A merchant stole the image of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in the 15th century, intending to sell it in Rome. This man became ill and repentant, he asked a friend to return the icon to the Church so that it could be venerated by the faithful.
This friend’s wife prevented him from returning and the man died. Later, Our Lady appeared to her six-year-old daughter and told her to put the work in a Church. On March 27, 1499, the icon was enthroned in the Church of San Mateo, where it remained for more than 300 years.
When there was an invasion in Rome, in the 18th century, the Church of San Mateos was destroyed and the work was taken to a hidden place, being forgotten for 30 years. Later, an Augustinian monk, who was very devoted to Our Lady of Perpetual Help, told the story of the icon to an altar boy, who became a Redemptorist priest. Over time, the Redemptorists bought a place to make their Mother House for the congregation and the young priest helped to rediscover the icon.
In the beginning of 1866, Pope Pius IX gave possession of the image to the Redemptorists, recommending: «Make the whole world know this devotion.» Then, many copies of the icon were made and scattered throughout the world.
After the mission given by the Pope, Our Lady of Perpetual Help was officially named the Patroness of Redemptorists. Her party is celebrated on June 27. After the restoration of the image, it was delivered to the Church of San Alfonso, where it is venerated by the faithful.
