María Sánchez, makeup artist: “If you have gray hair and gaps in your eyebrows, use a pencil with a brush to mark the eyebrow and then comb it upwards”

With age or hormonal changes, eyebrows tend to become thinner and gray hairs appear. Gaps may also appear due to old hair removal or less hair regeneration.

If you master the correct technique, you can achieve a very natural result in the drawing of your eyebrows. It’s not about drawing them from scratch, but about enhancing what is already there with precise strokes and the proper use of a brush.

A well-crafted eyebrow can rejuvenate the face instantly, provide expression and balance the features without the need for excessive makeup.

The pencil, the essential tool

Expert makeup artist María Sánchez (@mariaferjol on Instagram) explains that you need a pencil with a brush, on one side, and a fine tip on the other to imitate the hairline. The idea is not to color the entire eyebrow uniformly, but to recreate hairs where there are gaps.

You can follow this step by step:

  • First, comb your hair downwards. María Sánchez recommends starting by combing the eyebrow downwards with the built-in brush. In this way, the natural line of growth is more visible.
  • Draw some hairs. Next, draw straight lines from the birth to the highest point of the eyebrow arch. The strokes should be thin and light, almost imperceptible, to serve as a guide. A common mistake is using a thick line that shadows the entire eyebrow and creates an artificial look.
  • Afterwards, the tail of the eyebrow is worked on with a slightly upward movement, which stylizes the look and provides definition without hardening the features.
  • Comb the eyebrow upwards, finally. This gesture opens the look and helps to check if there are visible gaps that need additional filling. At this point, new lines are made parallel to the first ones, again looking for the arch of the eyebrow. This final brushing is key, as it diffuses any excess product and makes the strokes integrate better with the natural hair.

Colored gel, an ally against gray hair

Eyebrow care can be done completely naturally.

When gray hair appears on the eyebrows, the pencil alone is not enough. To cover them and fix the hair in place, the ideal is to use a colored gel.

Its function is double: on the one hand, nuances the tone of gray hair so that they integrate with the rest of the eyebrow; on the other, sets the hair and maintains the desired shape for hours.

It is advisable to choose a tone as close as possible to the natural hair color. If your hair is very blonde or light, you should avoid colors that are too dark as they can harden your features, explains María Sánchez. On the other hand, an intermediate tone manages to soften the look and maintain the harmony of the face.

If you prefer, instead of the colored gel you can use a natural alternative based on cocoa and charcoal or a mixture of henna and coffee.

How to apply the gel correctly

The gel should be applied to the eyebrows with upward movements, following the natural direction of the hair. This not only covers gray hair, but also achieves a thicker, raised eyebrow effect.

It is advisable not to overload the applicator: it is preferable to apply several light strokes than a single thick coat. A useful trick is insist on the areas where gray hair is most visible and, if necessary, combine two tones to tone without making the contrast too noticeable.

In addition to pencil and gel, it is worth taking into account some details that will be key to the final result:

  • Maintain eyebrows clean and shaved only as necessary to respect its natural form.
  • Brush them daily to train hair to grow in the desired direction.
  • Do not apply makeup base or powder on them, since they can reduce the fixation of the gel.
  • Remove makeup with a gentle makeup remover so as not to weaken the hair.

Professional design

If your eyebrows have a lot of gray or gaps and you cannot achieve the desired effect with makeup alone, a good alternative is to go to a professional eyebrow design every so often.

A specialist can help you define the most appropriate way for your face and to maintain a base that is easier to apply makeup at home. With minimal maintenance and the right products, your eyebrows will look natural, defined and in harmony with your features.
