In the ancient Assyrian civilization, the figure of the lamasu was already known, sometimes represented by a winged lion instead of a bull. This is not surprising if one takes into account that the figure of the lion reflected the power of the sovereign.

In fact, the lion-bodied lamasu is thought to be the Mesopotamian version of the sphinx that, centuries later, Greek culture rescued in its female form.
