A new trend in TikTok has gained relevance in recent months and refers to a technique to reduce the symptoms of anxiety by putting your face in ice water.
Let’s say that this technique helps relieve anxiety because activates the diving reflex of the body of mammals. Additionally, some people claim that it can also help relieve nausea and hangovers.
But you’re probably wondering what is the dip reflex? It is a reflection of the mammals that Optimizes breathing to allow you to stay underwater for long periods of time.
It consists of the cessation of breathing (apnea), a drastic decrease in heart rate (bradycardia) and an increase in peripheral vasoconstriction (when blood vessels become constricted, blood circulation becomes slow or blocked).
But how can this help calm anxiety? Basically, The body responds physiologically to cold water immersion by stopping breathing and slowing heart rate to conserve energy for survival.
Dr. Judy Ho, PhD, a clinical and forensic neuropsychologist, explained to Well + Good that brief experiences with cold water or cold objects, particularly when the cold hits the face and nose, sends a message to the vagus nerve, which manages the parasympathetic nervous system known as the rest and relaxation system.
To put this technique into practice all you need is a container, water and ice.
Ideally, the bowl should be large enough to fit your face. Immerse your face in the ice water for 10 to 15 seconds and repeat as necessary.
The expert said that if this technique does not suit you, there are other alternatives such as placing a small bag with ice cubes or an ice towel on your face, splashing cold water on your face or taking a cold shower.
You can use this technique whenever you feel overwhelmed, or as a regular self-care practice.
However, remember that it is only a palliative method, seeking professional help in these cases may be the most appropriate.
