It is a fact that the natural seasonings give a special taste to the dishes. And with the trend of cooking at home growing stronger, you can plant spices in planters, in cups and small vases or even set up a mini garden.
If you have questions about which spices can be planted together, for example, don’t worry: we invite an expert on the subject to help you. The landscaper at J Lira Green Life, José Lira, recommends planting the following spices at home: chives, parsley, coriander, rosemary, oregano, thyme, pepper and basil.
Type of pots for planting spices
The type of vase to accommodate them will depend on the space you have. “If the plants are in a polythene container, planters or small pots, it is easier to carry them out to sunbathe. There are also clay vases red or natural, which are excellent for seasonings”, suggests the landscaper, who points out that the fertilizers and the land chosen must always be the natural ones. You can, for example, use those from the compost bin.
Collective sunbathing
All spices can be planted in the same pot, with a space of five centimeters between them — except rosemarywhich does not like to divide the land and, therefore, must be placed alone on the land, without “neighbors”.
there is not one specific time of year to plant them, but José points out that the spices develop better with heat and light. “Take the vase in the morning and put it in a place that gets sun. Do this two or three times a week and, if you can’t put it in the morning sun, put it in the afternoon sun, after 2pm, ”he explains.
When to water the spices?
One of the most common mistakes people make with spices and plants in general is the excess water. In the case of seasonings, it is important that the leaves are always moist so that they remain fresh.
The specialist gives tip to avoid exaggeration: “Sink your finger into the earth in the vase. If it comes out dirty, it is a sign that the soil is very wet”. He also says that the best period for watering is in the morning, until 8 am, but only if necessary. “Ideally, this should be done three times a week, and if the place is very sunny, every day”, he concludes.
