HERBS LIST BY POPULAR NAMES

The ongoing research will improve this list with the passage of time. For now, it is a somewhat controversial list. Each plant has several names.

They are called in different ways in different languages and in different communities. Sometimes names refer to the traditional medicinal use of grass, others to the aspect of grass or folklore associated with it, sometimes it is difficult to determine where the name proceeds.

Main conclusions

The popular names of herbs vary greatly between languages and communities, which makes them a complex and controversial issue.

These names can be based on factors such as traditional medicinal use, appearance or folklore associated with grass.

Some argue that popular names suggest that the ancient pharmacopoeia was mainly based on plants, but this idea may not be true, since ancient practices also used animal parts and sometimes even human in medicine.

Some say that the use of popular names shows that the ancient pharmacopoeia was based mainly on plants and that everything that suggests parts of animals or even humans is actually a code for a plant. However, this does not make much sense.

While it is true that many popular names of plants sound like parts of animals, there is no reason to assume that animals of animals were sometimes not simply parts of animals. We know that even today, «primitive» tribes practitioners often make use of animals of animals (and sometimes humans), and we know that oriental medicine occasionally uses parts of animals, why would we think that the ancients would not? We know that they used the entrails of animals for divination, blood to guess, why not parts of animals for medicine?

This list is based on what circulates through the community and is considered exact and common knowledge. I have heard some things, others have read them, others I know … all are currently under scrutiny. Some things did not resist my review and have already been changed or erased, but not everything has yet been reviewed. If I have a reference of a primary source, I will refer to that source using asterisks

.

The additional popular names of the herbs that we have in our database are also listed on the grass details page. If you look for a name you already know, you can find it using the site search function. If you know any name that does not appear on the list, use the comments function to add it.
