Who is Hades?

Son of Cronos y Rea, brother of Zeus, Poseidon, Hera, Estiia and Demeter. His name means «the invisible», a condition for the dead. Like Zeus and Poseidon, he is one of the three masters who shared the command of the universe after the victory over the Titans.

The myth of Hades: myth and origins

While Zeus obtained the sky and possessed the sea, he was seen as the sovereign of the underworld, or Tartar. He participated in the fight against the Titans, and the Cyclops armed him with a helmet that made invisible to those who took him. This helmet, similar to that of Sigfrido in Nordic mythology, was subsequently used by other deities, such as Athena and also by Heroes, as Perseus.

Hades and Cerbero.

In the underworld, Hades reigns about the dead. He is a ruthless master, who does not allow any of his subjects to return to life. They attend demons and various beings who work under their orders (for example, Caronte, the boatman).

Resident in the underworld, Hades spends his life in a palace similar to a mound, sheltered from sunlight, which he hates. Who dares to cross the great door that gives access to his kingdom is destined to never leave; He keeps you in addition to the souls of the dead, even any source of wealth present in the subsoil.

After defeating his father Cronos and his brothers Zeus and Poseidon, he became lord of the underworld. He kidnapped and married Persephone. The world of the dead is also called Hades. He was the love -in the heart of the underworld. But over time he identified with the underworld.

With his wife Persephone, he ruled on the dead. The access roads to his kingdom were two rivers, the stigge and the Aquente in the one who sailed Caronte with the mission of conducting the dead before the God to be judged. Most of the dead ended up on the plain of the asfodelos (a kind of purgatory); The luckiest arrived at the Elysees fields, while the few who had dared during their earthly life to offend the gods had the Tartarus its final destination.

Sometimes it is told among Olympic divinities, although this is contrary to the canonical tradition; Hades, on the other hand, had little presence in mythology, being essentially linked to mythological stories related to heroes: Orpheus, Theseus and Heracles are some of the few mortals who have met him.

Persephone kidnapping

With him Queen Persephone, no less cruel. He kidnapped her in the plains of Sicily while playing with her companions and picked up flowers. Persephone, Demeter’s daughter, is her granddaughter.

It is a painting of Persephone’s abduction by Hades, which became his wife and could only leave the underworld once a year. The picture is painted on wood with gold background, 43 cm x 52 cm. Around the 18th century. Provided by Missing Link Antiques. Unknown painter. (Life Time: 18th century)

Hades was in love with her, but Zeus, Persephone’s father, had not consented to marriage, repelting him before Demeter of meeting the young woman locked forever in the Hall of Shadows. Then, Hades decided to kidnap her, perhaps helped in this rapture by Zeus himself, who would secretly become his accomplice. Later, Zeus ordered Hades to return Persephone to his mother.

But Hades had taken precautions: he had given him a grain of Granada; Now, anyone who visited the Empire of the dead, and ate something here, could no longer return to the world of the living. Persephone, therefore, was forced to spend a third of each year with Hades.

Fight with Heracles

Hades barely intervenes in the legends, apart from the history of the rapture, which belongs to the Demeter cycle. We also see it in the myth of Heracles.

The Iliad tells that, during the descent of the hero to the underworld, Hades forbade access to his kingdom; He met him in the «door» of the underworld, but Heracles wounded him with an arrow on his shoulder, to the point that Hades had to be transferred to the Olympus, where pawn, the healing god, applied a wonderful balm and cured him.

Some variants show Heracles knocking down God with a huge stone. Whatever the facts, the victory is taken by Zeus’s son.

Worship

He did not usually mention Hades by name, since he was afraid to question or provoke his anger. We often talked about him using euphemisms. The most recurring was that of Pluto (the «rich»), an allusion to the inexhaustible wealth of the Earth, both of the cultivated land and of the mines it hides. This pluton is often represented by holding a cornucopia, a symbol of that wealth.

He also plays an important role in the Samothracy mythical religion, where he was called Axiokersos.

The low funds

The term Hades also designates the kingdom of the dead on which God governs. It hosts the souls of all the dead, except those of insepultations, forced to wander without peace during all eternity in an area outside the true other life.

In any case, their sad condition can end if someone in the meantime is in charge of their burial: once they enter the Hades, they acquire, as the other dead, the possibility of scrutinizing what happens and what will happen on earth (but according to the odyssey, no spirit has this capacity, apart from the Tiresias).

The souls of the virtuous enter the Elysees fields (also called, in some sources, the fortunate islands), those of the evils are relegated to the tartar and subjected to atrocious and eternal torments.

Ixion is a little known character of Greek mythology. Known for being the first to kill his relatives, he was banished and Zeus took pity on him. But Ixión offended Zeus and was sentenced to eternal punishment. It is tied to a fire wheel that turns in the Tartar. 1731.

According to Virgil, in Hades there would be two other areas: the fields of crying, where the souls of those who suffered for love are found, and a section reserved for all the good warriors who died in the war and were honored with funeral rites and burials.

The entrance

The entrance can be located in

  • The most remote western part, where the sun’s rays do not arrive.
  • In Sicily, in Etna.
  • Tenaro capo, at the tip of the Peloponnese.
  • Inside a colonist caves, near Athens.
  • on the Ionic coast of Greece, in the Bay of Ammoudia. Now the place has changed to man’s work, but in the past, near the swamp of acherusia, was the oracle of the dead (necromànteion). The oracle remained active until the Roman conquest, in the year 176 AC according to the ancients, the surrounding region, which extends between the Gulf, the right bank of the Aquente and the mountains, was populated by the legendary cimerios, gloomy inhabitants of the darkness that lived underground without ever going out in the day.
It is believed that the entrance is close to Cuma, in Campania, near the Averno Lake, formed by the crater of a deep volcano, surrounded by cliffs and full of mefitic exhalations. According to etymology, Averno means «without birds» and in reality the birds could not live there because of the emanations.

Rivers

In a time it was thought that all rivers on Earth flow underground towards the immense abyss of Tartar, and then drain and take a different appearance according to the nature of the terrain.

Before leading to the depths of the Tartar, some underground rivers travel numerous tunnels. Others surround the earth with one or several spiral laps, such as snakes, until descending to the center of the earth (not beyond because, otherwise, they would rise to the opposite hemisphere).

Therefore, it is certain that there are different water courses in Hades, although your disposition is communicated differently according to the sources. Some streams, which can be rivers or swamps, flow slow and threatening, others have violent or burning currents.
