When the Wang family enters the monotonous office beige and gray of finance for a fiscal audit, The building lacks soul thanks to homogeneous cubicles and fluorescent lighting. His auditer, Deirdre (Jamie Lee Curtis), is sitting in a cubicle full of awards to the auditor of the month, and the austerity of the Finance Office transmits the fight of a family of Chinese immigrants for finding a space in a United States designed for white people.
It is at the Finance Office where Evelyn begins to change universes. In one of them it is a Kung Fu star, in another it is a parody of Ratatouille Starring a Mapache, in another Joy and Evelyn are sensitive rocks with jumps before rushing through a cliff. The universes become increasingly crazy as the viewer follows the trip through Evelyn's point of view, and intentional sensory overload facilitates Evelyn's path towards empathy: «It is a mental expansion trip in which slightly different universes are shown, but also wildly different. The intention is to visually show his inner trip,» says Production Designer Jason Kisvarday. «We take more and more creative freedoms as their experiences are more and more wild. It appears and accepts this absolutely crazy environment because it is evolving.»
Among the most shocking and memorable universes in which one finds one in which his nemesis of the Treasury, Deirdre, is his lover and, for some inexplicable reason, they have long sausage fingers. «We were writing and thought: 'We have to devise a universe that is the biggest challenge of empathy,» says co -director Daniel Scheinert.
With a color palette in flesh and blood tones And a phallic imagery, nothing in its relationship makes sense, but this version of Evelyn does not even question it: «They have built a life together in this world; this experience is what has needed Evelyn to learn to feel empathy for the relationship of her daughter, to experience first hand a home full of love. Learn that it has nothing to do with sexual orientation, because love is love,» says Kisvar. It points out some of its favorite design details that transmit the contagious rarity of this universe, such as knit gloves with extra long fingers that hang from the wall and the huge portraits of cats, a nod to the collection of photos of cats framed at the table of the deirdre office in the real world, which became a real obsession in this universe. Kisvarday played with recurring Easter eggs throughout the film, contributing to the mightism.
