definition of mega

Mega may refer to:

• 1 • mega-, the SI prefix for one million (10^6, symbol M).

• 2 • With «mega» you can refer both to the speed of a connection (usually an Internet connection) as well as to the amount of data in bytes.

Mega as a way to measure connection speed

It is very common for internet provider companies to offer the speed of the service in «megabytes», which is not entirely correct because it leads to confusion. Mega is simply a prefix for units (see first meaning).

Actually, the correct thing would be to sell the speed in mbps (megabit per second). Therefore, when they offer 10 megs of internet speed, they are offering you 10 mbps.

One mega in internet connection is equivalent to one million bits per second (1 mbps or megabit per second).

For example, an Internet connection with a download of 2 megabytes transfers 2 million bits per second (2 mbps). How much is this in kilobyte? 2 million divided by 8 equals 200,000 bytes per second, or about 200 KB/sec.

Megas as a way to measure data storage

When we are referring to data storage, a mega is an abbreviation for a megabyte. A mega, in this case, is equal to 1 MB = 1 Megabyte = 1024 KB = 1,048,576 bytes.
