Can dogs eat spinach? | .de

The delicious leafy vegetables often taste very good to people, and especially in the form of creamed spinach, the green plant is a real treat with potatoes, fried eggs and other delicious dishes. But can dogs eat spinach? We give you an answer to this question here.

Here’s how to feed your dog spinach

For an extra dose of vitamins and minerals, you can feed your dog spinach. However, spinach is not completely tolerated due to the oxalic acid it contains and can put a strain on the kidneys. Oxalic acid inhibits the absorption of calcium and vitamin C. These two substances are essential for the immune system and bones. Please only feed spinach in small amounts and steam the leafy greens beforehand without adding salt.

In order for the bioavailability of the spinach to be maximum and the difficult digestibility to be overcome, you should puree the steamed spinach beforehand. Then spinach can become an ingredient in dog food.

To make spinach even better tolerated, you can also feed them calcium. You can do this with yoghurt, for example. Never give your dog milk containing lactose or even creamed spinach.

Dogs that have had a kidney stone in the past or have other kidney problems should completely avoid spinach in their food. The same applies to puppies with healthy kidneys.

What vegetables can dogs not eat?

The same rules apply to beetroot, because if dogs can eat spinach, they can also eat beetroot. However, beetroot also contains oxalic acid, so you should make sure when portioning that you don’t feed too many vegetables with the same ingredients.

Don’t give your dog raw nightshade vegetables like tomatoes, potatoes, or eggplant. Avocados are also taboo due to their high fat content. Legumes such as beans are also toxic to dogs when raw.
