What are total lunar eclipses?
lunar eclipses They occur when the Earth comes between the Sun and the Moon, causing the Earth’s shadow to fall on the Moon and darken it. It is a phenomenon that can only occur during a full moonwhen the Sun, Earth and Moon are aligned in a straight line, with the Earth in the center.

There are three types of lunar eclipses:
- Total lunar eclipse: It is the one we will see this month of September and it happens when the Moon passes through the darkest part of the Earth’s shadow (the umbra). The moon, in these cases, appears reddish because the Earth’s atmosphere bends and filters sunlight on the Moon. That is why it is known as blood moon.
- Partial lunar eclipse: when only part of the Moon passes through the umbra and becomes dark.
- Penumbral lunar eclipse: When the Moon passes through the outer part of the Earth’s shadow (the penumbra), resulting in a subtle darkening that can be difficult to perceive.
Lunar eclipses can be seen from all those parts of the Earth where, at the time they occur, it is night and they have the peculiarity that they last several hours.
When will the total lunar eclipse be in September 2025?
The night of September 7, 2025 A total lunar eclipse can be seen in much of Spainexcept for the westernmost parts of Galicia and the Canary Islands, where a partial eclipse will be seen. How to see the total lunar eclipse well
Unlike what happens with solar eclipses, Lunar eclipses do not pose any danger to eyesight. and can be enjoyed without using any type of eye protection. Binoculars or a telescope can be useful to better enjoy the details.
The Moon will rise in the east while the sun sets in the west, as always happens during a full Moon, so there will be no risk in looking toward the Moon as it rises above the horizon.
Whether it can be observed well will depend on whether there are no clouds in the sky. If the weather conditions are favorable, all you have to do is look for a site without light pollution nor buildings or trees that cover the moon and direct your gaze to the sky.
