Who was the augur in ancient Rome

In ancient Rome, an augur was a specialized priest who was consulted to translate omens and use various forms of divination to decide the appropriate course of action.

Normally, the Augur watched the behavior of the birds, but could also find other significant omens.

Often the augures of state affairs were consulted, including the military, and the auspicious taking was a ceremonial part of almost any important decision making for the State and for private citizens.
