Adonia: Mobile Festival in Ancient Athens

Adonia was a mobile party that was held in the old Athens (and possibly in Rome) in what is today July or Augustially nine days after the seventh new moon of the year, or on the 9 of the month of Hekatombion, and lasts until the full moon.

Some traditions use today the fixed date of July 19.

Adonia celebrations

Adonis effigies were made and placed as if they were prepared for burial and funeral rites were performed. The women of the house planted rapid growth seeds (peasant hinojoles placed their plants (barley, lettuce and wheat) in baskets on the roof and took care of them for eight days, after which they let them die and then cried them.

They were called «Jardines de Adonis» and threw themselves into the sea at the end of the party. It is possible that some of them were buried, burned or thrown into the sea with the effigy. It is possible that women «proper» would cry their gardens in the roofs, while «loose» women participated in the public duel with the effigy in the streets.
