Who is Loki?

Loki is a deity belonging to the Nordic pantheon. Odin and Thor’s partner (with the first forged, in ancient times, a blood brotherhood link), it is presented as a very particular figure whose main characteristic is an ambiguous duality.

Loki and Idun (1911), by John Bauer.

The writings remember him as an enemy demon of the cosmic order, an evil and perfidious deceiving, but, at the same time, he is sometimes remembered as an ingenious inventor and others such as the one who helps the gods in difficult times.

Loki’s myth: myth and origins

He belongs to the lineage like this, however, his family and his offspring are related to malignant demons, especially giant. He is the son of the giant Fàrbauti and the goddess Laufey (or Nàl) and this reveals a first aspect of his dichotomy since in his person the aspects of both races coexist: the evil of the giants and the commitment of the gods to maintain the cosmic order from Laufey.

In fact, Loki misdeeds do not end in themselves, but are necessary to maintain balance in the cosmic order: only when the «twilight of the gods» (Ragnarok) arrives can give free rein to his evil side to guide the forces of evil against the gods.

With the giganta Angroboða, he had three children. Hel, the terrible guardian of the underworld. Fenrir, the enemy cosmic wolf of the gods. And finally, Jormungand (or also miðgarðsormr), the snake of Miðgarðr, which rests in the ocean wrapping the earth.

With the subtitle «Kampf der Uterngehenden Götter». «Battle of the convicted gods.» Ragnarök is produced: Odín rides to the battle and points his spear towards the open mouth of the wolf Fenrir, Thor defends himself from the jörmungand snake with a shield while he shields his hammer Mjöllnir, Freyr and the flashy cool they fight, and an immense battle develops around and on the arc bridge Iris Bifröst, behind them. Wägner, Wilhelm. 1882

With the goddess Sigyn had her children Narfi and Vàli, who are probably the only children of Loki who have nothing to do with the forces of evil, since they are children of a sincere and faithful love.

As a bearer of evil on earth, Loki is also remembered as the father of the witches. In fact, it is said that he found a half -to -the -woman heart among the incandescent embers of a bonfire, and eating it, he was pregnant, giving life to the witches. This was not Loki’s last pregnancy, in fact, the God is Sleipnir’s father, the magical horse of eight legs of Odin with runes recorded on the teeth, that the God, transformed into Potra, had of the stallion Svadilferi.

Loki has the ability to transform at will. In the poems, we find it in the form of a fly, flea, hawk, salmon or seal. This is due to the knowledge and practice of that magic called Seiðr that entails impotence and homosexual behavior for men.

Here are the pregnancies of Loki, whose duality implies the coexistence of male and female attitudes in his person: in fact, the antipathy that the gods feel towards Loki is known for their way of «lying like a woman.»

He is a very old God; We find it mentioned in two myths (the abduction of Iðunn and Sigurðr and the Nibelungos) together with Odin and Hœnir. They represent the triad that gave life to the man from a tree trunk in the prediction of the fortune teller.

In this myth, together with Odin and Hœnir, another God called what it gave heat and good appearance to men is mentioned. Later, the hypothesis that the name of Loður is nothing more than an ancient variation of the name of Loki: this would identify Loki as a kind of creative and civilizing God, as well as a deity of the fire (in fact, the ancient Scandinavian word «logi» means flame).

First of all, Loki embodies the principle of the evil inherent in the creation itself, necessary for the existence of the cosmos that is based on a balance of opposite principles. He is identified as the poison of existence, possessing the principle of evil, but to preserve himself and his cause paradoxically he is forced to defend the principle of good.

Among the many myths that see it as the protagonist, the most important are:

  • The myth of the creation of Mjöllnir (Thor’s powerful hammer) in which he, in the form of a fly, annoy the dwarf Brokkr who was forging him, causing his failure.
  • The myth of the kidnapping of Mjöllniren that Loki helps Thor recover the same object that was stolen by the Utgarða-Loki giant.
  • The myth of Baldren’s murder that the god of deceptions induces the blind and innocent Höðr to kill the god Baldr and prevents him from returning to the living.

This can be considered, in fact, as the last of his misdeeds: Loki, captured by the gods, is forced to observe his son Vali who, transformed into wolf, clear his brother Narfi.

Later, with his viscera, Loki is tied to three rocks and is placed on top of a snake that spits poisonly through his mouth. Meanwhile, Sigyn tries to relieve the suffering of his beloved collecting the snake poison with a Palangana to avoid burning the God, but every time he moves away to empty the full container, the poison drips on Loki’s face causing violent spasms that make the earth tremble.

He will be sentenced to this torture until Ragnarok’s day arrives, in which he will be released from the snake of Miðgarðr and will lead the armies of evil against those who have condemned him: the gods of Asgarðr.

In modern times, Loki has often compared with the figure of Satan. This is incorrect, since it is still interested in preserving the cosmic order, while Satan is a fierce rival of that order.

In addition, there is the general belief that Loki is Odin and stepbrother of Thor, with whom the throne of Asgarðr is disputed. The various novels have spread this belief, films and comics that have seen the Nordic God as the protagonist, but as we have said previously, Loki is an ancient God who even belongs to the triad who gave life to men and is also the blood brother of the godfather Odin.
