When the cortex of certain trees is damaged, «bleed» resin that can catch an insect or the chemical substances it contains can be unpleasant for predators and scares them out. The chemical substances contained in the resin can also be healing for the tree, preventing the introduction of pathogens into the wound. Humans have been collecting trees resin for a long time to use it as glue, varnish, incense, fragrance and medicine.

The resin is not soluble in water, but it can dissolve in alcohol and many also in oils, although it is often necessary to heat them. Resins may burn directly and usually produce a lot of smoke.
