1. Tenure Security: That is, that the inhabitants are certain of the property of their home, avoiding, among other things, the forced eviction.

2. Availability of services, materials, facilities and infrastructure: Ensure that housing has the correct and necessary facilities for optimal operation.

3. Affordability: The cost must be such that all people can access a home without risking or eliminating the satisfaction of their rights.

4. Habitability: Provide favorable spaces that guarantee physical security and functionality within housing.

5. Accessibility: Design housing in such a way that anyone can inhabit it, especially vulnerable and disadvantaged groups, especially people with disabilities.

6. Location: It must be located in an environment that allows access to basic services, employment opportunities, recreation and recreation areas, as well as being far from risk or contaminated areas.

7. Cultural adaptation: It is considered adequate if taken into account and the context and historical-cultural identity is respected.

UN-Habitat supports the creation and construction of accessible, adequate and dignified housing for the entire population.

Durable housing

A house is considered durable if it is built in a non -risky area and has a permanent and adequate structure for its inhabitants. The criteria used to determine the structural quality and durability of the homes are:

  • Structure resistance
  • RESISTANCE OF CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS FOR THE WALLS, ROOF AND FLOOR
  • Compliance with construction codes
  • The house is not in ruins
  • Housing does not require major repairs
  • The house is not located on inclined land
  • The house is not located in or near toxic waste
  • Housing location according to danger
  • Housing is not located on flood
  • The house is not located in a passage as a railway, highway, airport or electric lines

Sufficient vital space

A house is considered to provide sufficient vital space for its inhabitants if it has less than four people per room available.

In this way, UN-Habitat supports the creation and construction of accessible, adequate and dignified housing for the entire population, urging governments and professionals to consider these concepts in the future design of cities and homes, providing a small grain of sand to equal conditions and right and access to anyone to have a home.
