Wooden floor, a good idea for your bathroom?

The projects of the architects of the list AD100 They speak for themselves: the wooden floor or parquet appears more and more in the bathroomsby Marine Bonnefoy to Hauvette & Madani. The counterintuitive idea is to introduce this noble floor even in the wettest rooms, to maintain some unity with the other rooms of the house, add warmth or enhance the elegance of the material. However, there are many reasons to reject this approach. Wood is a fragile and porous material that tolerates water very little, even varnish, according to many decoration professionals. But that doesn't seem to scare some Designersthat decide to incorporate it equally to their bathroom projects. We have interviewed several interior designers and here are their answers. Now it's your turn to decide.

Against the wooden floor in the bathroom: the choice of reason

For Delphine Versace, from the Parisian duo Friedmann & Versace, the wooden or parquet floor is discarded. «It's not a good idea,» he says. There are boat cover parquet soils, but they don't age well. On the other hand, to maintain the elegance of the bathroom, the decorator recommends the marble floor. «It's the best,» he says, «both for aesthetics and by practicality!»

Because of great care, the water enters the ground, even through the steam, and quickly degrades the material. The risk: spots at the beginning, then arabitated aspect of the wood. Julien Sebban, founder of Uchronia, agrees: «I love and understand the idea of wooden floor in the bathroomIt is beautiful, warm and pleasant, but I do not recommend it at all. It is only my personal opinion, but it seems to me that the parquet does not usually get old in a bathroom: there are always together that take off, humidity spots or lime in the water. «

Benjamin Godiniaux, architect in Paris, appreciates when your customers are willing to run the risk of installing wooden floor in the bathroom. In the case of small spacesfor example, where the bathroom is usually adjacent to the bedroom, avoids a break in the floor introducing tiles. «For some architects it is a heresy, for others it is a choice,» he says. But he warns: «It is true that if customers are not careful, if they leave the bathroom carpet on the floor, the wood will be very deteriorated within five or six years.» This is the council that gave the owners of the little duplex that has recently ended near the Bois de Vincennes, where the chamber parquet continues in the bathroom, to guarantee continuity.

2. A well varnished parquet
