keeping wild guppies

With a few exceptions, it is possible to keep and breed wild guppies once they have become accustomed to them. Because they sometimes occur in nature under conditions that are significantly worse than in the aquarium, they are quite robust and easy to care for.

The food should have a high vegetable content. Algae are also liked to be plucked off. A corner with java moss in the aquarium is ideal for keeping and rearing. The young fish can hide in it. In addition to algae lawns and microorganisms, they also eat fresh moss buds there.

The parents do not strongly pursue the young fish. Of course, the young should not swim straight in front of the parents’ mouths.

Degeneration in wild guppies

In some wild guppy strains, e.g. B. Colombian wild guppies, deviations in color and size can occur after a few generations.

This can be compensated for by crossing in fresh blood. So that pure stocks are obtained, guppies of the same species must be crossed, e.g. B. again Colombian wild guppies. This also applies to cultivated forms.
