Posture recommendation
The Strawberry tetra often also called ruby tetra or pepper tetra, belongs to the small remaining tetras. It has its origins in South America. It is mainly found in the Rio Meta, which flows through Colombia and Venezuela. This is a tributary of the Orinoco. Strawberry tetras are freshwater fish that only reach a maximum body size of three centimeters when fully grown. The attractive fish owes its name to its colour.
This ranges from shiny silver to deep red. The strawberry tetra has a black spot on its caudal fin. Depending on the water temperature, the red color varies and makes keeping them in the aquarium so interesting.
Strawberry tetras are calm and peaceful fish that live in schools of at least eight to ten individuals. They do not belong to the frequent swimmers, but sometimes «stand» with the entire swarm between the floating plants. Because of this, it is possible to keep strawberry tetras in relatively small aquariums or nano aquariums.
gender differences
The strawberry tetra is between the two sexes hardly visible differences. While the males are much more intensely colored and form a stronger red, the females are about one centimeter taller and are generally more sturdily built than their male counterparts.
breed
For breeding the strawberry tetra is so far little known, reports are not yet available. The free spawners show little or nothing of their reproductive methods, so that targeted breeding in the aquarium is hardly possible for non-professionals and rather left to chance remains. Even from the wild there is little information on the breeding behavior of the pretty mini fish.
socialization
The Strawberry Tetra is a peaceful and calm fish, which should preferably swim in a pure species tank. In a community tank, however, it can also be kept with other non-aggressive, calm species. Another possibility is the socialization with shrimp, which he generally treats in a friendly manner.
