Origin

The natural range of the L25 catfish is Brazil in the Pará region. There the fish live in the river system of the Amazon, in the Rio Xingu, Rio Iriri and Rio Bacajá. There he lives on sandy, tiny and rocky substrates.

The genus Pseudacanthicus belongs to the family Loricariidae and the subfamily Hypostominae.

attitude

The L25 catfish is a feast for the eyes for all aquarium fans. The large animals feel only in a correspondingly large tank with an edge length of at least 250 cm. The new residents move around a lot, especially during the settling-in period.

The bigger they are and the more specimens live together, the larger the dimensions of the aquarium must be (an additional 50 cm is added per fish). After all, the animals shouldn’t become rivals and should get along. Although they can also live alone, they feel most comfortable as a Couple or in a small group from conspecifics. After a while they become calmer and like to lie around on smooth rocks or hide.

The facility must be in place, especially when keeping several animals different territories be divided. These include open space for foraging and gudgeling, background planting, roots and wood (mookia roots and mangrove wood) as well not too many plants. Examples of robust plants are:

– Brazilian Pennywort

– Hornwort

– Java Fern

– Small Duckweed

– water hyacinth

– Vallisneria species

– Dwarf spear leaf species

Large catfish need many different hiding places. There are always more hiding places to plan for than animals. According to the natural habitat, continuous smooth rock structures are suitable. Tubes that are open on both sides are also suitable as a cave with the possibility of escape. The installations must be stable, so that they don’t collapse when digging in the sand, swimming in and lying on them and bury the animals under them. Stable buildings may well be gutted upwards.

As A centimeter high, round-grain sand is suitable as a substrate or a not too coarse gravel. Then the animals can dig in there for something to eat without injuring their barbels.

The optimal water quality measures warm temperatures of 26 to 30° Celsius. There is a neutral to slightly acidic pH of 5.5 to 7.5 and a moderate total hardness of 0 to 20° dH. The conductance is between 50 and 400 µS/cm. The use of a functional filter system and flow pump is indispensable and ensures clean and oxygen-rich water.

food

The L25 catfish is one of those carnivores (carnivores). The varied diet can consist of frozen and dry food, tablets, pellets, granules, catfish chips and fine fish fillet.

The main thing is that it is of high quality, healthy and easy to digest. Indigestible parts end up in the water and cause pollution and excessive algae growth.

gender differences

Males and females can only be distinguished from each other from a length of about 15 cm. Often is the male’s head longer and broader than the female. The dorsal fin is certainly larger. A more attractive coloring can also be observed in specimens from the same home region.

breed

The Breeding is possible but rare, as this is expensive and requires a large tank. Sexual maturity of Pseudacanthicus occurs after about 15 cm in length.

They are cave breeders that attach the sticky spawn to the ceiling of a cave.

socialization

The L25 catfish can be mixed up with conspecifics, with smaller catfish and with other peaceful fish such as perch, tetras and gouramis socialize.

With species-appropriate keeping, the loricariid catfish can Age up to 20 years to reach.
