Hello,

great that you are interested in fish and aquariums. Fish are almost ideal pets. They don’t bark loudly, don’t scratch furniture, don’t climb up curtains and don’t have to go for a walk in the pouring rain.

However, there are a few things you need to think about if you have or want to have an aquarium with fish. You can read here which things are important.

What you can read here!

On this page I’ll tell you a few things about Pisces that I hope will be of some interest to you and that should help you understand the rest. So there are the pages:

On the second page The aquarium I will then explain to you everything you need to keep fish and how to set up and set up an aquarium. On the third page The fish I describe a few fish that you may have heard of and tell you what advantages and disadvantages these fish have. Finally, let’s take care of the fourth page The care nor about the care of the aquarium. Please read everything carefully before you go to the pet shop to buy fish. I have tried to write everything so that you can understand it well. If you still don’t understand something, ask your parents to explain it to you. At the bottom of each page, there is always a box for your parents to read. If you click on the links, which are always at the bottom of the pages, you can scroll back and forth.

Why fish need suitable water

The fish come from many different countries.

The water in which the fish live there is also different everywhere. You probably know that the water in the sea is very different from that in rivers. Sea water contains a lot of salt, river water only a little. That is why the water in rivers is also called fresh water. It is important for all fish to be able to live in the water that suits them. That’s why sharks, for example, only live in the sea and not in the river.

Only very few fish, like the sturgeon, can live sometimes in sea water and sometimes in fresh water.

But salt is not the only difference in water. There are many other substances in water. A few of these are very important for Pisces. If the substances are not in the way the fish likes, they can get sick and die. You’ve probably already seen in TV commercials how washing machines break down because there is too much lime in the water. If there is a lot of lime in the water, it is called hard water. If there is little lime in it, this is called soft water.

A lot of leaves, branches and other substances fall into some rivers. These substances break down and turn the water dark. Some of these rivers are really brown. Some rivers are so colored that their water is called black water.

Water from rivers with only very little coloration is called white water.

There are aquarium fish that need soft water. Others need hard water to be comfortable. So before you buy fish, you have to ask your parents if your water is soft or hard. In Germany, the water is mostly hard. You should therefore not buy fish that only like particularly soft water.

Fish that tolerate hard water well are, for example, guppies, platies and black mollies. Fish like neon tetras and red-headed tetras need soft water. It doesn’t really matter to zebrafish and harlequin barbs, it just can’t be too hard or too soft.

What else is important for Pisces

Most fish come from countries where it is warmer than ours. So the fish also need warm water. Most fish and also aquatic plants like water that is 25 or 26 degrees warm.

The next thing to remember is that the fish grow in different sizes. Fish that grow particularly large must also be placed in a particularly large aquarium. After all, you don’t want to live locked in a closet.

Just as you may fight with other children from time to time, not all fish get along with each other.

For example, some fish nibble on particularly long fins. Other fish swim around wildly all day and other fish like it when the aquarium is quiet. So make sure that your fish later match.

What do you have to think about when buying fish?

  • The fish must match your water.
  • The fish must not be too big for your aquarium.
  • The fish have to get along with each other.

A lot of people, even adults, don’t think about this and then later get angry that their fish are getting sick and dying.

Before you go into business, it is best to ask someone who has had an aquarium for a long time which fish are good for you and which are not. Also ask him what fish he has, how long his fish have been alive and how often they are sick. If his fish are often ill, die young, or his aquarium is new, he may not know his way around very well. In many cities there are also aquarium clubs where you can ask.

The explanations on the pages for children deliberately present many facts in a very simplified way. Much more ingredients contribute to the quality of the water than are described here. Significantly more precise representations can be found on the main pages of the archive. Nevertheless, the simplified descriptions should enable an understanding of the essential connections and should not give rise to any misconceptions.

Please do not leave your child alone when taking their first steps in exploring the world of aquaristics. Not everything runs as smoothly as it seems with such a representation. Algae plagues, fish diseases, technical defects, etc. can occur. Not all of these problems can be anticipated here.

The pages are currently still very text-heavy. I and especially the children would be happy about support in the form of small pictures of the animals and plants mentioned or additional texts.

Notices of errors are also welcome.
