▷ Borkum North Sea Aquarium – reopened | All info

This was in the year Opened in 1977 by Wilhelm Friedel. After the first few decades, the original building, which Ihno and Maria Oetjen took over in 1997, became too small. At that time, the city of Borkum decided on a completely new building, which is still preserved in the architecture of that time.

The total 16 aquariums were all installed and set up by hand. Using this approach, the habitats of the exhibited animals could be reproduced very closely to reality. This benefits both the creatures and the visitors, who get very convincing impressions of the living environment of the animals there.

Diversity of species and topics in the 16 pools

In the 16 large aquariums have found a home for a wide variety of sea creatures. These include umpteen types of fish, jellyfish or snails and mussels. But also very rare animals like spider crabs or melon jellyfish are to be examined here. The different themes of the pools are based on the actual conditions that can be found outside the North Sea Aquarium right in front of the door: in the North Sea itself. There are pools that are modeled on the mudflats, others that are modeled on the tidal creek or even a real harbor basin are.
