Latin name and origin:

The guinea fowl danio, also known as Danio margaritatus or Rasbora Galaxy, is a small species of carp native to the Republic of the Union Myanmar and from Thailand. Danio describes the genus of danios.

His name means “adorned with pearls“. This is due to its appearance, as it bears spots similar to those of the guinea fowl on its plumage. The fins have black or red stripes. The belly is immersed in an intense red color and the back appears slightly brown-reddish.

Size and required aquarium size:

Since this subspecies of rasbora is one of the dwarf fish, an aquarium with a length of 54 cm or more is permitted. The Danio margaritatus grows up to 2.5 cm. The capacity of the tank should not be less than 60 liters.

Contents of the pool:

At best, there are enough retreats for the dwarf fish. A very dense planting, bog pine roots and various pebbles and larger chunks should be present. The right balance between enough swimming space and lots of hiding places has to be found. Put stones on the side of the aquarium and place the roots in such a way that they do not hinder swimming. Mosses or pearl cabbage should be chosen as plants, as these are ideal for spawning.

With dimmable LED lights you achieve the perfect lighting. In addition, plants are to be placed on the surface, which further dim the light. This way the fish feels comfortable and can get used to its home.

Water parameters and temperature:

The Danio margaritatus is easy to care for. The water temperature should be between 19 and 25 degrees Celsius. The pH value fluctuates between 6.8 and 7.5 at best. So it shouldn’t be acidic or basic. The degree of hardness of the water is 5-18 degrees dGH. The carbon hardness is 3-20 degrees dKH. This creates the optimal basis for a healthy environment.

Behavior and number:

The guinea fowl rasbora is a schooling fish. Your social behavior in the crowd helps make them feel safer. A total size of 10 animals must not be undershot. If this is the case, however, you will not see the beautiful fish very often, as they only hide due to the small shoal size.

In their new home they will be a bit shy at first anyway. However, they then develop into peaceful, fun-loving little animals that get along very well with snails, small dwarf crabs and shrimp.

Gender differences exist. The females are more delicately colored and somewhat more voluminous in their expression. The main difference is in the rear fin. In the females, this is mostly transparent or only very weakly colored.

Area:

As can be seen from the previous description, the fish feels very comfortable in a school. If there are also plenty of opportunities to hide, this is the best case for this little fellow.

Lining:

In short, the guinea fowl rasbora is a omnivore. Anything that fits in its mouth will be devoured. His favorite foods include Daphnia, Cyclopse and Artemia, i.e. small living animals. However, dry food can also be used, as can frozen food.

Attention, regular feeding is necessary, since the dwarf fish only devours food that is at medium water level! Several times a day that contain small amounts of food are optimal. If the fish is well cared for and fed regularly, it can live to be 3 years old. A varied diet is a must!

However, care must also be taken not to feed too much, because the Danio margaritatus will eat a lot at the beginning. This is due to the fact that, unfortunately, he is not fed often enough in pet stores.
