Most tetras that are kept in the aquarium come from the waters of South America. But the Blue Congo Tetra comes out Africa, more precisely from the Congo, as the name suggests. It’s called the BLUE Congo Tetra because it has a slight blue tinge has. Its actual habitat are rainforest rivers in the Zaire region (Congo). The Congo Tetra grows between 6 cm (females) and 10 cm (males).

Because these tetras are so big and also like to swim, they should be kept in aquariums from 100 cm. Of course, larger aquariums are better, where the animals also feel visibly more comfortable. You can tell because they move around a lot. Because of the swimming joy, there must be enough free swimming space, especially in the foreground.

If possible, Congo Tetras should only be kept together with fish of the same size or smaller and also calm. Of course, these fish must also prefer the same water.

Water parameters for blue congo tetras

The water temperature should be between 23 and 27°C. These tetras prefer rather soft water, i.e. around a carbonate hardness of 4. Although much harder water (more than 10) is also fine. If possible, the water should be changed regularly, but not too much, which means that you should change 20-30% of the water about every 10 days. The pH should be relatively low. 6 to a maximum of 7.8 are “tolerable” for the blue congo tetra.

Blue congo tetra breeding

Breeding is not easy. Congo Tetra (blue and yellow) are free spawners. The development of the eggs takes about 5 days. It’s mostly about the 300 eggs filed. When the little ones have hatched, they eat Artemia right from the start and tend to stay in the upper half. The breeding of Congo Tetras is therefore possible, but you need a lot of patience and a lot of experience for the breeding and later successful rearing of the young Congo Tetras.
