The Oranda Goldfish is a lively group fish that should not be kept as a solitary specimen. It belongs to the Cassius auratus auratus and, as a cold-water fish, needs correspondingly low temperatures. The fish is kept in the garden pond. Although it is possible to spend the winter in the aquarium, it should be avoided due to the effort involved and species-appropriate keeping. This peaceful schooling fish is easy to keep with other goldfish species. The Oranda is considered an omnivore and therefore does not make any special demands on the feed. He also nibbles on algae in the pond. Depending on the pond occupancy, the diet should be varied with frozen, live or flake food. In addition, the animals can reach a very old age, up to 30 years.
gender differences
Sexual characteristics are noticeable in the oranda goldfish during the spawning season. The males then develop white, pimple-like spots on the gill covers. This is what is known as a spawning rash. Females can basically only be recognized by their increasing corpulence. Hundreds of eggs make the belly of the fish spherical. In rare cases, females also develop a spawning rash. In this case, gender determination is only possible via the anal fin. A small protuberance can be seen in females. In males, the anal fin curves inward.
breed
Oranda goldfish have already been successfully bred in the garden pond. The eggs are laid just below the surface of the water and then fertilized by the male. If the pond liner is present, the spawn often sticks to it. The eggs are generally laid in the spring. After about a week, the young hatch. However, the oranda tends to eat its own spawn or the juveniles that have hatched. Therefore, weedy areas in the pond are suitable for offspring so that the offspring are protected by their parents.
socialization
The Oranda goldfish is generally a very peaceful fish. For species-appropriate husbandry, it is important that the fish is kept in a group of at least 5 animals. Since this breed and other goldfish breeds can reach a considerable size, the pond should have enough space for the animals. It should also be noted that this is a cold-water fish. Since a large number of freshwater fish usually only feel comfortable in warmer water temperatures, socialization with other fish species is automatically difficult.
