Product test: kennels for German Shepherds
Best outdoor hutch: Kerbl kennel
Stable, durable, simple. This is the best way to describe the Kerbl kennel. The hut is made of glazed pine wood and is therefore weatherproof and extremely robust.
The bitumen roof protects your four-legged friend from rain, snow and strong sunlight.
The height-adjustable plastic feet are particularly practical. These can be adjusted so that the hut stands securely even on uneven ground. The elevated position also protects your dog from soil moisture.
The Kerbl kennel is delivered in individual parts. In the box you will find detailed assembly instructions so that you can quickly put the dog house into operation.
The hut is available in two sizes. The smaller variant (85*73*80cm) is suitable for small dog breeds. Larger four-legged friends can be accommodated in the 100*88*99cm hut.
Best choice for home: Hobbydog dog cave
This kennel German Shepherd is made of fabric and is therefore cuddly soft. Due to the yielding side walls, the dog can lie down very comfortably. The manufacturer states that the material is scratch, water and stain resistant. So stains don’t stand a chance.
If the hut does get dirty, the cover can be easily removed and washed.
With the dimensions 76*72*74cm the kennel is not the biggest. But it is big enough for small and medium-sized dog breeds. The hut is also suitable for large dogs that like to snuggle up close together.

Perfect all-rounder inside and out: Trixie natura doghouse Classic
The Trixie German Shepherd Kennel is made of glazed pine wood.
This wood is considered to be particularly robust and weather-resistant. The flat roof covered with sanded roofing felt also provides good weather protection. Conveniently, the roof can be easily opened for cleaning.
The height-adjustable feet of the kennel ensure a secure footing and a dry floor. So nothing wobbles even on uneven ground. The fact that the hut is higher also helps to minimize the cold floor, so that your dog has a more comfortable lying surface.
If you want to help your dog in the cold season, you can also purchase an insulating insert and a plastic door that make the interior even cosier.
If good insulation is particularly important to you because you plan to use the kennel outdoors, then be sure to check out my review of the top three insulated dog kennels.
Purchase advice
What should you look out for in a kennel for German Shepherds?
When you want to buy a kennel for your dog for the first time, you are probably wondering what features you need to look out for. That’s why I’m presenting my most important criteria here.
1. Where should the hut be used?
You should ask yourself this question first, because it decides which material is suitable for you.
For the outdoor area, the hut should be stable and weatherproof. Therefore, models made of fabric are out of the question. Even plastic does not withstand the weather for very long. That is why wood is the best option for outdoor use.
Indoors, on the other hand, all materials are permitted. Fabric, plastic or wood – depending on what appeals to you most visually and best suits your interior.
2. The right size
A kennel should offer enough space for the dog to feel comfortable in it. The rule here is: Better too big than too small. If the hut is too narrow, the dog will not use it and will rather look for another place to sleep. This would miss the goal of creating a retreat for your dog.
Too large kennels, on the other hand, are not a problem. Because let’s be honest – there is no such thing as too much space. Or would you complain if your living room was twice the size?
But how do you know if a hut is the right size?
As a rule of thumb, the dog can stand, sit and lie stretched out in the kennel without any problems. Turning shouldn’t be a problem either. If you are unsure, take one size larger.
For German shepherds, size XXL is usually recommended when choosing the size of the kennel.
3. Stability
The hut must be stable so that your dog feels comfortable in it. If the dog house tilts with every movement, your dog will prefer to look for a safer place to sleep. Height-adjustable feet, which can also be adjusted on uneven ground so that nothing wobbles, are particularly practical.
Conclusion on the shepherd dog kennel test
Since the kennel is mainly used outside for me, the Kerbl kennel German Shepherd convinced me the most. The stable, weatherproof structure and the flexibly adjustable plastic feet are very practical.
For anyone looking for an indoor dog house, I can recommend the Hobbydog dog house.
And if you want to be able to decide flexibly where the dog house should be, you will be happy with the Trixie natura Dog House Classic with a flat roof.
