It is said that seven human years equal one year in the life of a dog. If you want to calculate the dog’s age, you really only have to multiply the four-legged friend’s years of life by seven. However, that is only partly true.

In fact, there are big differences between the different breeds. Small dogs usually age much more slowly than their larger conspecifics and usually get older accordingly. If you want to calculate the age of your dog, you have to take this fact into account.

How old can dogs get anyway?

The age that a dog can reach depends on several factors. These include in particular the diet, the type of housing and the care that the owner gives his four-legged friend. In addition, however, the breed also decides on the expected age of the respective dog.

Small breeds, weighing less than 30 pounds, usually live between 10 and 15 years, although some can live as long as 18 years. Medium sized dog breeds weighing 30 to 100 pounds typically live to an average age of 10 to 13 years, and large breeds over 100 pounds typically live to an age of 8 to 12 years.

The following list gives you an overview of the average age of some popular dog breeds:

  • Bulldog: 6 to 9 years
  • Irish Wolfhound: 7 to 9 years
  • Rottweilers: 8 to 10 years
  • St. Bernard: 8 to 10 years
  • Great Dane: 9 to 11 years
  • Chow Chow: 9 to 11 years old
  • German Boxer: 9 to 12 years
  • Giant Schnauzer: 10 to 12 years
  • German shepherd: 10 to 12 years
  • Cavalier King Charles Spaniel: 11 to 13 years old
  • Collie: 11 to 13 years
  • Dalmatian: 11 to 13 years
  • Bernese Mountain Dog: 11 to 13 years
  • Labrador retrievers: 12 to 14 years
  • Golden retrievers: 12 to 14 years
  • Poodles: 12 to 14 years
  • Doberman: 12 to 14 years
  • German Wirehaired Pointer: 12 to 14 years
  • German Shorthaired Pointer: 12 to 14 years
  • German Longhair: 12 to 15 years
  • Beagles: 12 to 15 years
  • Dachshund: 13 to 15 years
  • Border Collie: 13 to 15 years old
  • Miniature Schnauzer: 13 to 16 years
  • Jack Russell Terriers: 14 to 16 years old
  • Chihuahua: 12 to 20 years

Of course, the age information in our list is only an average. It is therefore quite possible that your dog will reach a lower or even a higher age. But as you can see, the trend is relatively clear. The larger a dog breed becomes, the shorter its life expectancy is in most cases.

When are dogs considered old?

It is generally accepted that dogs are considered old when they are about three quarters of their average life expectancy. For example, if a breed is 12 years old on average, a four-legged friend would be considered old from the age of nine.

However, this rule of thumb does not necessarily say anything about the condition of the animal. Because just like us humans, there are dogs that are still fit and vital even in old age and enjoy the best of health. In addition to husbandry and nutrition, genetic factors also play a role.

Characteristics of old dogs

The possible signs that can indicate advanced age in dogs are numerous. Most senior dogs need significantly more rest breaks and are no longer as mobile as their younger counterparts. In addition, the fur usually loses some of its shine with age and some gray hairs can grow in some breeds, especially in the muzzle area.

In addition, the so-called old age complaints usually accumulate with increasing lifespan. These include, for example, problems with digestion, eyes, joints and teeth as well as an increased susceptibility to infections.

Calculate dog age: an overview

The table below shows you the differences in converting dog ages to human years based on breed size and will help you calculate your own dog’s age.

Calculate dog age – our conclusion

As you can see, the age of a dog cannot be calculated using a universal formula. Instead, you need to consider your dog’s size and weight, as well as breed-specific characteristics.

How long your dog ultimately lives and how quickly it ages also depends on a variety of other factors. A balanced diet and exercise appropriate to the species and age can help ensure that your four-legged friend does not die prematurely and can still enjoy good health in the autumn of his life.
