The succulent of the Kalanchoe species, popularly known as flower-of-fortune (Kalanchoe blossfeldiana), it’s super easy to care for. This is because it is resistant to climatic variations, does not need constant irrigation and has excellent adaptation to internal and external environments. In addition, in the same species there are variations such as the cat’s ear (Kalanchoe tomentosa), the mother of a thousandes (Kalanchoe laetivirens), among others. If you want to know how to grow this type of plant, check out some tips below:
Environment
The best temperature for growing is between 13ºC and 29ºC. The environment needs to have plenty of light, in addition to being warm and humid, preferably.
Planting
The ideal for planting Kalanchoe is a fertile soil, well drained and fertilized. In addition, it is a plant that propagates well by cuttings. Plants of this species that are purchased at flower shops need to be kept in larger vases and in places with exposure to sunlight in the morning for them to adapt.
watering
In summer, water the Kalanchoe twice a week, in winter, once. Before watering it, touch the soil and see if it is starting to get dry, as this is the right time to water. Irrigation must be manual so that all parts are filled with water. However, be very careful not to soak the soil, which can favor the development of fungi. If this happens, separate the plant from the others so that the fungus does not spread. Also, do not let the soil dry out, as the plant may lose nutrients, turn yellow and even lose its leaves and flowers.
sun exposure
It can be grown in partial shade and needs to be exposed for two hours in full sun. The ideal period would be in the morning or late afternoon, avoiding times when the sun’s rays are strongest, as it could damage your plant.
pruning
Remove whenever possible the flowers, leaves and stems that are dead. Also, be careful not to cut the parts that are healthy.
Flowering
It is a species that blooms all year round, but the main flowering time is during the winter and early spring. If you want it to flower at other times of the year, you’ll need to leave it in a dark place for at least 12 hours every day and only leave it in the morning sun. Also, don’t forget to protect her from the cold.
