A very effective infusion to regulate sugar
Using these plants that we have just proposed to you, the experts at the Manantial de Salud herbalist shop propose a very complete hypoglycemic herbal tea based on:
- bean pods
- rough centaury
- galega
- copalchi
- stevia leaves
How to prepare it? Mix the plants in equal parts and separate a level tablespoon of the mixture per glass of water. Heat the water, pour the mixture, let it rest for 10 minutes and filter. No sugar or any other sweetener is added, since stevia already gives it a sweet flavor.
you can take one or two cups daily, depending on blood glucose levels.
A diet richer in fiber to reduce sugar
In type II diabetes, rather than leaving everything in the hands of pills and medicinal plants, it is very important to take care of your lifestyle, especially your diet. The best way to prevent diabetes and to take care of yourself when you have it is to follow a diet with a low glycemic index, that is, with foods that do not transform very quickly into glucose or cause high insulin demands. Here are some keys:
- More vegetables: foods with a lower glycemic index will be rich in fiber and low in sugars and fats; and in general, dietary fats should be 70% of plant origin. Among the most advisable foods they meet: vegetables such as spinach, watercress, carrots and red cabbage, especially steamed; brewer’s yeast, whole wheat and spelled bread; onion and garlic, better raw; nuts and some seeds such as sesame seeds; rolled oats, and legumes such as beans.
- Choose fruits well: Choose fruits that are relatively low in glucose, such as pears, strawberries, cherries and apples.
- Eat without haste: It is advisable to eat slowly, chewing well and without getting stuffed.
We consume much more sugar than we should
We Spaniards consume four times more sugar than the 25 grams per day recommended by the World Health Organization, a true nonsense that we are not always aware of.
Much of the sugar we consume is part of other food products and goes unnoticed on labeling. The WHO recommends 25 grams daily.
Excess sugar in food is associated with obesity, diabetes, vascular disorders and some types of cancer, among other diseases. They are disorders and main causes of mortality that could be reduced if sugar consumption, including hidden sugar, was reduced.
Furthermore, work on sugar cane plantations is one of the hardest in the world and is among the lowest paid. In some countries, 16-hour days are paid at two euros and there are no objections to child labor.
There is also environmental damage: The demand for sugar causes sugarcane plantations to invade and destroy rainforestsmangroves and other ecosystems, which reduces biodiversity and favors climate change. Sugar imports from Spain represent the emission of 130,000 tons of CO2 per year.
25 grams campaign
VSF Food Justice has the «25 grams» campaign underway so that Spanish laws protect consumers.
The 5 requests that they demand from the Government (which you can join at vsf.org.es) are:
- That advertising of foods harmful to health be regulated (especially that aimed at children).
- That it be required to clearly inform on the labels of the amount of sugar contained in foods, as well as the effects that excessive consumption produces on health (as is done on tobacco packages).
- That healthy food options be guaranteed in schools and that advertising of harmful products for children disappear.
- That taxes be imposed on unhealthy foods and that healthy eating be rewarded.
- That food industries be included in the Transparency and Access to Information Law so that citizens can control it.
