In the water, the young water lily-like water poppy forms elongated, narrow leaves that branch off directly from the stem. When the plant has broken through the water surface, it forms dark green floating leaves 40 to 100 centimeters long stalks rest. The round, leathery leaves are up to 12 centimeters in diameter.
The white to light yellow flower has a stalk and 3 petals. Their diameter is 5 to 8 centimeters. It is similar in shape to the California gold poppy. The Flowering time is April to September. The individual flowers only last 1 to 2 days. The water lily-like water poppy always produces new flowers.
distribution
In its homeland, the water poppy grows in ponds with muddy subsoil. The plant has now spread to Australia, New Zealand and the United States.
husbandry conditions
The water lily-like water poppy needs a sunny to semi-shady Location. The plant grows from a water temperature of 18°C. It can be in the house in the aquarium, for example in the conservatory. In the summer she feels comfortable in her own container outside in a shallow pond. Rotting plant material must be removed.
particularities
The water lily-like water poppy is not really an aquarium plant because it only develops floating leaves. Water poppies kept outdoors must be brought indoors for the winter and can be accommodated in an aquarium for this purpose.
