The Tucano Tetra (Tucanoichthys tucano) is a real rarity when it comes to aquarium inhabitants. The small fish originally comes from South America, where it is mainly found in Brazil and Colombia. There he lives in Rio Uaupesa tributary of the Rio Negro. With a maximum length of only 2 cm, it is one of the smallest tetras at all and is considered a miniature fish. For this reason, it can even be kept in the smallest aquaria, the so-called nano aquaria.
The aquarium fish is particularly noticeable because of its broad, dark longitudinal stripes, which run from front to back across both sides of its body. The head area of the Tucano Tetra is colored yellowish to gold, while a slightly reddish spot appears behind the eye.
The fins of the small tetra are transparent, only the male specimens are slightly reddish in color. The aquarium should be kept relatively dark, because then the bright pastel colors of the fish really come into their own. The Tucano Tetra feels most comfortable in a warm water temperature between 24°C and 28°C degrees.
The pH value should be between 5.0 and 7.0 and the water hardness between 1° and 15° dGH. Due to their South American origin, softer water is always preferable to harder water for these tetras. Overall, the animals need soft, clean and very acidic water to live. In addition, it should also be dark in color with humic acids. The aquarium should have a dense planting that sufficiently softens the light. There should also be numerous hiding places and retreats in the tank. Caves, rock structures and roots are particularly suitable for this.
The Tucano Tetra is an omnivore. It should be ensured that he receives fine live food and frozen food every day. However, he is also satisfied with granulated food.
gender differences
There are few sex differences in the Tucano Tetra that distinguish the female from the male. The males have reddish fins, while the females do not. The female animals are also somewhat fuller.
breed
It is possible to breed Tucano Tetras in the aquarium. These animals are so-called detention spawners. The females stick their eggs to plants, rocks or roots. The animals practice active brood care, which is generally a rarity among tetras. During this time, the male drives away any enemies and can become relatively aggressive. A spawning grid can be helpful.
socialization
The sociable Tucano Tetra (Tucanoichthys tucano) can be kept either in a pure species tank or in a community aquarium. A general socialization of Tucano Tetras is quite possible in an aquarium. However, since the animals only reach a maximum length of up to 2 cm, they should only be socialized with correspondingly small fish species. Other small and peaceful ornamental fish, dwarf shrimp or invertebrates are best suited for this. You should also pay attention to similar water parameters.
