The home of the three-striped dwarf cichlid is in the upper reaches of the Rio Guaporé and in the lower Rio Paraguay in South America. Varied habitats include shallow, vegetative riparian areas in clear or white water with floating plants and fallen foliage on the bottom. The water quality is soft and acidic.

attitude

A species-appropriate attitude of dwarf cichlids takes place in one Blackwater Pool with a side length from 100 cm and a Water level of at least 25 cm. Each fish should have a territory of 25-30 cm² receive. The bottom and the back wall are kept dark. The bottom substrate consists of sand or fine gravel. The fish feel better when the water temperature drops to 15-17 °C instead of always 25-26 °C.

Since Apistogramma trifasciata to the polygamous fish heard, a male should be kept with several females. Sufficient hiding places are just as important caves (Moorkien wood, stone constructions, flower pots, potsherds, coconut shells, thick bamboo canes) and dense planting. The natural leafy soil is recreated with low plants such as java moss, java ferns and dwarf spear leaf. When designing the aquarium must be sufficient free swimming space be available!

The light in the tank can be dimmed with floating plants (sumatra fernwie), for example. One is advisable peat filtering and a partial water change of at least 30% every two weeks. In addition, one should light water flow be present for oxygen-rich water.

Caution: Dwarf cichlids are sensitive to increased nitrite and nitrate levels in the water.

food

In the wild, dwarf cichlids feed primarily on small insects, crustaceans and other zooplankton. In the aquarium, the menu consists mainly of live food such as mosquito larvae, weevils (Bosmina), freshwater shrimp, leafworms, earthworms, snails, water flea species, Tubifex, Cyclops and Artemia. In addition, frozen food, food flakes and food granules can be given.

The young fish are fed with fine live food such as Artemia nauplii or rotifers. Later they receive Cyclops and Water Fleas.

gender differences

The females and males of the dwarf cichlid differed mainly in the body drawing. The male has bluish shiny flanks. A dark longitudinal band runs from the mouth to the base of the tail and along the dorsal fin. Likewise from the gill cover to the anal fin. The fins are wide.

On the other hand, they show Females an inconspicuous greyish colouration. If they want to reproduce, they get a yellow color and a black spot on the flank.

breeding and rearing

The three-striped dwarf cichlid is a cave breeders (substrate spawners). Therefore, the breeding tank must be equipped with cave-like objects such as fallen flowerpots, piles of rocks, coconut shells with loopholes about the size of a walnut. The water quality is warm, soft and acidic (temperature 29-30 °C, pH and total hardness below 7).

When the female is ready to spawn, the male begins courtship and together they clean the spawning ground. The female usually lays her eggs on the cave ceiling. The female takes care of the brood, while the male ensures safety.

After 2-3 days, the fish larvae hatch. After the hatchlings have used up the yolk sacs and are swimming freely, they need food.

socialization

The shy three-striped dwarf cichlid is diurnal. One Socialization succeeds with peaceful tetras and catfish or other small fish with the same demands on the tank. A cast with shrimp is not recommended!

The number of species in a swarm is around ten specimens.
