Advantages of thermal filters

There is one less technical device in the aquarium.
The heat is distributed more evenly because the water movement in the filter is stronger than in the vicinity of a heater in the aquarium.
No fish can lay on the heater and overheat.
The temperature can be adjusted well.
The water in the filter is only slightly warmer than the water in the aquarium and does not harm the filter bacteria. The bacteria do not come into contact with the heater, but are located a few filter layers higher, e.g. B. Siporax. The filter sludge is therefore not boiled, as is sometimes assumed.
The heater is basically an immersion heater, so it can’t break.
The basket with heating is available as a spare part for thermal filters from Eheim.
With thermal filters from Eheim, the heating and filter have separate circuits. A heater defect has no effect on the filter and vice versa.
If the heating is defective, a rod heater can simply be hung in the aquarium.

A thermal filter costs significantly more than the filter and heater individually.
If the flow decreases, the heating output may no longer be sufficient.
The incoming water is strongly heated and with it the bacteria in the filter. It takes longer for a biological equilibrium to be established in the filter and in the aquarium.
The filter bacteria do not tolerate temperature changes well. A 4 degree fluctuation in water temperature can cause turbidity and a decrease in nitrification.
The heating rods are usually in the lower area, where plant remains etc. are sucked in. The heating loop must be cleaned more frequently.
When cleaning the filter, 2 additional cables must be disconnected.
Due to the additional cable for the thermal sensor, the cable clutter is larger. If the line connecting the thermometer and thermostat is firmly attached to the filter, this line must be taken out of the base cabinet. There should be a plug connection on the filter for this.
If a sub-component is defective, the entire filter may have to be purchased again.
If a sub-component needs to be repaired, both parts are missing.
