Advantages and disadvantages of surface skimmer in the aquarium
Surface skimmer are nonsensical because they
- clatter loudly.
- need constant maintenance and monitoring.
- Suck up plant parts that float on the surface and then clog the suction device.
- Suck in feed for young fish.
- expel CO2 through the movement of the surface.
- are needed at most in open aquariums when dust falls on the water surface.
Surface skimmer are not nonsensical because they
- are quiet when used properly.
- Do not suck up plant parts.
- expel only a little CO2.
- do not need to be constantly monitored. According to Bauert, water is sucked in below if the inflow is blocked at the top.
The OFA surface deduction is repeatedly mentioned as good and reliable.
Tips for the Eheim suction device
The Eheim suction device must hang in such a way that the movable double suction device does not hit the top or bottom when it is floating on the water. With a strong filter, the float will rattle. The filter must then be throttled.
If the aspirator z. B. is operated in the bypass and the flow rate is regulated with a tap, the surface skimmer from Eheim works noiselessly.
Changing the weight may help to prevent rattling. To do this, the lid is opened and weight is removed or added.
The Eheim aspirator can be closed for feeding. It is also possible to have the aspirator only suck off temporarily.
General Tips
At least some suction devices should be placed in the aquarium for a day before use. Otherwise the suction devices will rattle and shuffle. If a lubricating film has formed on the plastic after approx. 2 days, the extractors are working silently.
A pre-filter must be used after the aspirator so that the filter is not clogged too quickly by plant parts.
With a slow flow rate, an aspirator hardly expels any CO2, even in continuous operation.
