Boraras naevus owes its name to its beautiful red strawberry colour. This small fish was only described a few years ago and was previously known as Boraras micros «red». It is a carp-like freshwater fish and belongs to the danios family.

The strawberry dwarf rasbora can be found in pools, ponds and even in simple moats in Thailand, Borneo, Sumatra, Malaysia and Cambodia. The special thing about this fish is that it has no skin sensory organs. In the aquarium, Boraras naevus has an amazing life expectancy of up to 10 years.
gender differences
The male has a striking red coloration and a black spot on the sides. Orange-red markings can be seen in the fins, and the front edge is also colored black. The female comes with a paler red colouration. The black shoulder patch is also not as pronounced. However, an adult female is slightly larger than the male. So the difference is easy to see.
breed
So far, it has not been easy to breed offspring. The female lays her eggs between the delicate plants in the aquarium. They then sink to the bottom and are fertilized by the male there. The parents do not take care of the brood and they would even eat the eggs. Therefore, the brood should be immediately transferred to a separate rearing tank. Initially, the freshly hatched rasbora are fed with powdered food and infusoria, later with artemia nauplii.
socialization
The strawberry dwarf rasbora can be socialized with small peaceful fish species and especially with shrimp. Since Boraras naevus feels particularly comfortable in black water, you should make sure that other residents also prefer it when socializing. It has such a small mouth that it cannot become dangerous to other creatures in the aquarium, especially the offspring of some shrimp species.
Posture recommendation
The bottom should be equipped with fine sand. Fine-leaved plants and floating plants can serve as vegetation so that the little danios can withdraw. The floating plants also have the task of insulating the pool in terms of brightness. However, make sure there is enough free swimming space.
