The steel blue killifish comes from Africa, but does not live in East Africa. It lives in the rivers and lakes from the Ivory Coast to the Congo Basin.
killifish have a propensity for intolerance with other fish. They are mainly in competition with male conspecifics and also like to attack small fish.
Look
Because of its beautiful appearance, the killifish is a real eye-catcher in the aquarium. The most important distinguishing features include the colorful outfit and the size of the anal fin, which is larger than the dorsal fin. The color design can vary slightly in intensity. As a rule, they are green-blue and have numerous red spots of different sizes. The dorsal and anal fins sit far back on the body. They are yellowish with a red stripe.
attitude
Best in one species tank maintain, whereby one male and two or more females should be used. Like the waters of the species’ origin, the water quality in the aquarium should be soft, slightly acidic, and lukewarm. The size of the pool is from 80 cm edge length.
The desired dim light is with a floating plant cover and one dark substrate reached. These lighting conditions bring out the beautiful colors of the fish even better. The substrate is equipped with sand or fine gravel. The facility is a mix delicate standing and floating plants (frog bite, mosses). It is important that there is enough space for swimming. Different hiding spots Structures made of rock or stone, root cavities, tubes and upturned clay pots offer safe shelter for resting and observing. When setting up is on the freedom of movement of the fish to respect.
food
Mainly get the killifish several times a week live food from white mosquito larvae. Defrosted, chopped frozen food be fed from black mosquito larvae, Artemia, Cyclops and, more rarely, white mosquito larvae. Freeze-dried red mosquito larvae and Artemia are also possible from time to time.
As an additional dried animal food serves fine granules. Smaller amounts prevent the animals from reacting with digestive problems!
The young fish are fed with frozen Artemia nauplii.
That will be administered Feed twice a day and when stocked with young fish also three times a day.
gender differences
Females and males can be identified by their different body coloration distinguish easily. While the female’s colors appear inconspicuous, the males are significantly more colourful. Also, they are bigger.
breeding and rearing
Fundulopanchax gardneri is a detention spawner. The urge to reproduce can be stimulated by good food and water temperatures from 24 – 26°C. If the male is willing to mate, he drives the female along in front of him until the act finally occurs.
The females lay the fertilized spawn on plantswhere they stick with fine adhesive threads.
The young fish hatch after about two weeks.
socialization
Since the steel-blue killifish likes to dominate other fish, it should be socialized with peaceful fish of the same size, such as barbel, latticed loricariids, and emperor tetra.
The species of fish is “seasonal fish”. The life expectancy is therefore about a maximum of 1 year.
