This peaceful dwarf bass is native to northeastern India. Its habitat consists of rivers and lakes or ponds with clear water, which have dense vegetation. Since the males are very territorial and also defend them, there should be more females than males in the aquarium.
gender differences
The male has red stripes on a silver-blue ground colour. The fins are red with blue or turquoise stripes or spots, and the pectoral fins are longer. The males are very dominant. A less dominant male can also have a similar coloring to a female, but usually at least one colored stripe can be seen.

The female of the Scarlet Dwarf Perch is colored more of an inconspicuous grey. The body usually has dark, transverse stripes, there is never a colored stripe present. An extension of the pectoral fin is not recognizable here.
breed
Dario dario can only be bred in a separate rearing tank, as the parents do not take care of the brood and would eat their own young. After a good feeding with live or frozen food, the males show an extraordinary display behavior.
The female lays her eggs on the existing plants. The male protects and defends the eggs until the fry hatch. The babies, on the other hand, are no longer cared for and could be eaten by their parents. These should therefore be removed from the rearing tank as soon as possible after hatching. After about three days, the young swim freely in the tank and can be fed with Artemia nauplii.
socialization
Larger shrimp are usually not a problem. The mouth of this dwarf bluefish is too small to be dangerous to them. However, the brood of such shrimp could end up on Dario dario’s menu. Larger crabs and also crayfish are not suitable for socializing, as these, like the scarlet dwarf bluefish, live on the bottom and could cause considerable damage to the small fish. Other fish of the same size and similar attitude parameters can easily be socialized with this pretty perch.
attitude
There should be a sandy substrate. Lush planting is important so that the males can form their territories and still avoid each other. A structure-forming decoration made of stones, caves and roots should not be missing in the aquarium. Since the water temperature in the Dario dario’s native habitat can vary greatly, it is an advantage if the temperature in the aquarium is not always constant.
