It will different variants of Lagenandra meeboldii described. The most used type “red” has a particularly beautiful shape and variety of colors.

The different color modulations can be seen on one sheet. They range from olive green over light purple until Red. If fresh, still young leaves develop, they show a pale pink-red hue. The stronger tones develop with age. The more light the plant is exposed to, the more intense the colors become.

With a height of 10 – 20 cm and an impressive width of 15 – 30 cm, the rosette plant is one of the medium-sized specimens. The leaves get a length of 6 – 12 cm and a width of 4 – 8 cm. However, they each sit on a sprawling stalk.

distribution

The Indian aquatic plant comes from the southern states of Karnataka and Kerala. There it thrives at altitudes of 1200 m above sea level. It prefers a shady spot on the swampy banks of small flowing waters.

husbandry conditions

Due to its sprawling growth habit, Lagenandra meeboldii fits in the middle or rear area, depending on the size of an aquarium. It can also be planned as a solitary plant.

In terms of care, it is frugal and also well suited for beginners. It grows slowly and needs a patient aquarist. In terms of posture, it shows itself to be robust and persistent.

In order for the Indian beauty to develop its variety of colors, it needs at least medium lighting. The right soil is rich in nutrients and soft. The right water is warm, medium-hard and slightly alkaline.

The plant is grateful for an occasional dose of a nutrient-rich substrate. However, due to the slow pace of development, fertilization should only be moderate. Addition of CO2 is not necessary, but it influences better growth.

Lagenandra does not form underground spurs. Its root system consists of a strong and creeping rhizome. Although it develops the rhizome, it should not be tied up but planted in the substrate.

Propagation takes place via young plants on the rhizome. These should be carefully removed and planted elsewhere. Propagation can also succeed by dividing the rhizome.

particularities

The genus Lagenandra is related to the Cryptocorynae. This is a large water goblet chart. If she thrives above the waterline, she can even develop bud sites. The red form can be cultivated emersed. It can grow completely or partially above the water surface.
